Where the controller (24) determines the position of the head (20) is oscillating about the center line of a predetermined data track at a frequency above a predetermined frequency, the controller (24) reduces the gain factor applied in determining the adjustment value.

A multimedia data storage system including a compartmentalised drawer (20) which can be tailored to accommodate the differing cooling requirements of different device types thus allowing each device type to be mounted in any device position. A cover (20) in the form of a frame having a plurality of openings (42) fits onto the front of the drawer. A first device type includes a front bezel (22) which fills one opening in the cover and is cooled by air passing through a number of holes located along the length of the lower surface of the frame. A second device type (12) is cooled by air passing through a louvred panel (46) located in one opening in the cover. The panel includes a blanking member (62) which blocks off the frame cooling holes located in front of the second device type. Thus, for this device type, there is no air flow through the cooling holes. In addition, noise coming through the holes from inside the drawer is reduced.

In an air bearing slider according to the present invention, the rear of the slider is made to fly lower by altering the angle of attack of a rear air bearing region. In one embodiment of the present invention, a slider configuration includes a first air bearing region (31) at the leading edge of the slider and a second air bearing region (32) at the slider's trailing edge. The first air bearing region includes a tapered region (37). A deformable central region (33), including a non air bearing surface, joins the first and second air bearing regions and controls the relative angle between the air bearing surfaces. The relative angle is adjusted by deforming the central region using a layer of e.g. piezoelectric material which overlays the central region. A conventional read/write head is placed on the rear portion of the second air bearing region.

Data is written onto the disk, which is contained in a light-tight contamination-free environment similar to a Winchester hard disk drive system, using a near infrared light laser beam. Data is read from the disk using a visible light laser beam. The entire optical disk drive system is designed to fit within a standard mini or 5-1/4 inch disk drive form factor for personal computers.

A multiple actuator disk drive (20) utilizes multiple heads (46a-j, 47a-j) associated with respective ones of multiple actuators (341, 342) to read data from and write data to all tracks on the surface of a disk. The positioning of each head by the respective actuators (341, 342) is controlled by embedded servo-information recorded in the data tracks. The data tracks have a density of greater than 2000 tracks per inch. Utilizing two actuators (341, 342) provides access times which are reduced with respect to the access times provided by disk drives having a single actuator and an increased data transfer rate.

The structure and organisation of a magnetic disk drive optimises the volumetric storage density within a device form factor by maximising the number of disks. The spindle and dual rotary actuators are supported at each end by a pair of support plates 22, 23 that are separated and supported by not only the spindle and actuator shafts, but also the voice coil motor core pieces and tie bars 52 which carry shock mounts. The head disk assembly 70 is shock mounted in the lower part 73 of a two part enclosure 72, 73 wherein the enclosure parts are aligned and separated by elastomer guides 77, 78 and the separation covered by a compliant tape 89 to complete the enclosure. Both actuators use a common servo surface while one actuator carries upwardly facing transducers and the other downwardly facing transducers so that each arm extending between disks 16 mounts only a single suspension-transducer assembly, thereby reducing the interdisk spacing. The enclosure occupies the entire vertical height of the form factor and the head-disk assembly occupies the full available height of the enclosure interior to accommodate as many disks as possible. Electrical components are excluded from the axial sides of the stack of disks.
