There is provided a fire stop device (10) having a closure for a conduit (20) passing through an aperture extending through a wall, floor or the like. Fire resistant movable closure (22) means are operatively associated with the aperture. The closure means are movable between a first retracted position and a second functional position wherein the aperture is closed-off by the closure means. Self-sustaining restraining means of a heat disposable low-temperature melting metallic substance are used, the material being dispersible into a non-sustaining form when heated above the melting temperature thereof. The restraining means retains the closure means in the first position while permitting it to move to the second position when the substance is dispersed upon being heated. Means (26) are also provided for normally urging the closure means in the second position. Thus normally combustible thermoplastic conduits can be used up to the fire stop without affecting its operation.

Zur Schadensbegrenzung im Brandfall sind die von brennbaren Gasen oder Flüssigkeiten durchströmten Anlagenteile mit selbständig schließenden Absperrarmaturen ausgerüstet. Derartige Schließvorrichtungen sind im wesentlichen dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie durch ein eine Schließkraft hemmendes Element in Offenstellung gehalten werden. Aufgabe der Erfindung ist die Schaffung einer automatischen Absperrvorrichtung einfacher Bauweise, die bei ungewöhnlichem Temperaturanstieg in deren Umgebung zuverlässig und selbsttätig das Schließen einer Absperrarmatur bewirkt. Die Schließvorrichtung weist als die Schließkraft hemmendes Element mindestens einen druckbeaufschlagten volumenänderlichen Hohlkörper (5) mit mindestens einer Sollbrucheinrichtung (8) auf. Diese besteht aus einem Material, dessen Schmelztemperatur auf eine definierte Grenztemperatur eingestellt ist. Eine derartige Schließvorrichtung läßt sich mit verschiedenartigen handelsüblichen Absperrarmaturen (2 ) kombinieren. Bei Erreichen oder Überschreiten der Grenzwerttemperatur wird der Schließvorgang ausgelöst, in dem das Material der Sollbrucheinrichtung (8) schmilzt, der Druck an dieser Stelle entweicht und die wirksam werdende Schließkraft ein Schließen der Absperrarmatur (2) bewirkt.

The improved shaft locking apparatus includes a body (34) with a bore (36) therethrough and includes balls (48) mounted in radial ports (44) in said body so that in one position the balls partially extend into the bore and in restricting the bore lock a shaft (22) associated with the apparatus from axial movement. A heat sensitive material (72) is used as a part of the balls supporting means and when it is subjected to excessive heat, heat above its design limitations, its support of the balls relaxes and allows their retraction from the bore to thereby allow axial movement of the shaft. In one form of the invention the shaft extends into the bore of the annular body and the balls engage the end of the shaft to support it against axial movement and in another form a rod extension is positioned in the bore of the annular body and includes external ball receiving recesses which prevent movement of the rod extension when the balls are in engagement with such recesses and allows movement responsive to the relaxation of the ball support when exposed to excessive heat conditions, the shaft which is supported by the rod extension is then allowed to move axially responsive to the ball retractions.
