A compact and robust gas pressure regulator for use with gas delivery systems is provided, the gas pressure regulator in one form being adapted for mounting to a gas cylinder. The gas pressure regulator includes a body defining a front portion and opposed side portions, a first gas pressure indicator mounted to a lower end of the front portion of the body, and a second gas pressure indicator mounted to an upper end of the front portion of the body. The first gas pressure indicator and the second gas pressure indicator are stacked in a vertical configuration. A pressure adjustment knob is mounted to one of the side portions of the body and horizontally relative to a longitudinal axis of the pressurized gas cylinder. An energy absorbing device is employed to absorb energy from impact loads on the pressure adjustment knob.

Prior art devices contain diaphragm valves having a high degree of control precision. These diaphragm valves have a first chamber and a second chamber that is separated from the first chamber by means of a valve body. The valve body interacts with a valve seat, and a first connection channel placed in the area of the valve seat leads into the first chamber. A drawback exists due to the fact that these diaphragm valves, in their unaltered form, cannot be used as a pressure release valve. In the inventive device, the pressure control valve is thus improved whereby enabling it to also be used as a pressure release valve. To this end, the invention provides that the valve body (29) has a through channel (48) that, when the pressure control valve (22) is closed, connects the first connection channel (23) to the second chamber (32) of the pressure control valve (22).

The fluid flow regulators are capable of accurately handling substantially continuous fluid flow rates as low as about 0.01 cc/day. The regulators are so miniaturized, corrosion-resistant and non-toxic that they are suitable for being implanted in the human body; and are capable of being mass produced at costs so low, by using micromachining techniques, such as etching, that they may be considered to be disposable. The regulators are passive devices which consume no electrical energy at all. The regulators are reliable because they may have as few as only two parts, only one which is a moving part; and because they may handle fluids at very low pressures.
