The arrangement comprises a first pair of co-rotating elements, of which the first element (1) is so arranged as to support a replica (21) of a body which is to be produced, and the second element (2) is so arranged as to support a blank from which the body is to be produced. The replica and the blank are caused to rotate synchronously about the axis of rotation (3, 4) of the respective element. In a second pair of elements a third element supports a sensing device (31) which is capable of interacting with the external contour of the replica, and a fourth element supports a tool (52) by means of which the blank is capable of being machined. The first and second pairs of elements are capable of being displaced relative to one another. The fourth element is adjustably connected to the third element (29) in such a way that the tool executes movements which correspond to the shape of the external contour of the replica sensed by the sensing device (31).

A method of setting a profiling region in profiling which profiles the surface of a model and machines a work. A profiling region is set by a plurality of broken lines (43, 44, 45) and pick feed is effected when a stylus (5) reaches the broken lines (43, 44) and the work is machined by profiling. Since the profiling region is set by a plurality of broken lines (43, 44, 45), a necessary profiling region can be set correctly. Accordingly, a wasteful machining time can be eliminated and the life of a tool can be improved.

The tracer control system is provided with a first drive system (DV1, Ml) for feeding the tracer head (TR) in the Z-axis direction. a second drive system (DV2, M2) for feeding the cutter head (CTH) in the Z-axis direction, first and second position detectors (P1, P2) for detecting the positions of the tracer head (TR) and the cutter head (CTH) in the Z-axis direction, and a superimposing circuit (SUP) for superimposing on each other a position detection signal from the first position detector (P1) and an infeed command signal for setting the infeed of the cutter head (CTH). The cutter head (CTH) is fed by the second drive system (DV2, M2) in the Z-axis direction so that the difference between the output signals from the superimposing circuit (SUP) and the second position detector (P2) may be reduced to zero.

The profile-copy shaping machine consists of a vertical spindle (10) having an eccentric stylus (S) at the lower end thereof and being rotatable around an axis thereof, a spindle-tilting detector (60) for detecting in analogue manner the inclination of the spindle (101 by a differential transformer (62) to provide spindle- rotating speed and direction change-over control signals in proportion to the inclination thus detected. and a work table movement instructing unit (50) having movement detecting means (52) on the outer periphery of an instruction plate (50a) which is integrally rotated with the spindle (10). An embodiment of the surface-copy shaping machine consists of a spindle displacement detector (60) for detecting in analogue manner the displacement of the vertical spindle (10) to vary the elevationally moving speed of the vertical tracer spindle (10) in proportion to the displacement, and means (30) for temporarily raising the spindle (10) when the displacement of the spindle (10) exceeds a set value. Another embodiment of the surface-copy shaping machine consists, in addition to the spindle displacement detector (60), of stylus direction- retaining means for applying a correction in consideration of the inclination of the stylus (S) to one side of the stylus (S) so that the side applied with the correction may directtoward the copy shaping direction, and means for inverting the spindle over 180 0 .
