The invention relates to a method of treating a fabric involving metal peroxide impregnation. The invention is characterised in that a fabric, e.g. pre-bleached and/or desized hydrophilic fabric having a weft (or inversely a warp) comprising natural or synthetic cellulosic fibres, is subjected to the following: impregnation (I) in a metal peroxide leaving the weft (or inversely the warp) free for a period necessary for the swelling of the fibre forming the weft (or inversely the warp) of the fabric and for the modification of the cellulose; at least one relaxation operation without weft (or inversely warp) tension with the passage of air, during which the weft (or inversely the warp) swells and takes the form of a spring, following shrinkage; at least one rinsing operation; at least one washing operation; and at least one squeezing operation. The invention also relates to the elastic fabrics thus obtained and to the machines used to implement said method.

A leather-like sheet comprising a microfine long-fiber nonwoven fabric comprising an entangled web structure made of bundles of microfine long fibers and an elastic polymer impregnated in the microfine long-fiber nonwoven fabric. The leather-like sheet has the following features: (1) each of the bundles of microfine long fibers comprises 5 to 70 microfine long fibers having an average single fiber fineness of 0.5 dtex or less; (2) the bundles of microfine long fibers have an average fineness of 3 dtex or less; (3) the entangle web structure comprises superposed webs each comprising the bundles of microfine long fibers; (4) a ratio of the microfine long fibers and the elastic polymer is 70/30 to 40/60 by mass; (5) the elastic polymer is substantially continuous; and (6) a machine direction/transverse direction ratio of breaking strength is 1/1 to 1.3/1, an elongation at break in each of the machine direction and the transverse direction is 80% or more, and a machine direction/transverse direction ratio of elongation at break is 1/1 to 1/1.5. With these features, the leather-like sheet has a natural dense feeling resembling natural leathers, a soft hand a small difference of mechanical properties in the machine direction and the transverse direction, a moderate resistance to elongation and a durable recovery.

A leathery sheet object characterized by comprising a sheet object comprising a fibrous material and a polymeric elastomer and, contained in the object, a urethane compound modified with fluorinated side chains which satisfies the following requirements (i) to (iii): (i) the compound is constituted of a urethane-bond-containing compound having a molecular weight of 500 to 5,000 and bonded thereto 3 to 12 fluorinated side chains each having a molecular weight of 200 to 1,000; (ii) the compound has a fluorine content of 20 to 60 wt.% in terms of fluorine atom amount; and (iii) the compound has 6 to 36 urethane bonds per molecule. Also provided are: a process for producing the leathery sheet object; the modified urethane compound for use in the process; and a process for producing the modified urethane compound. The leathery sheet object is excellent in water repellency and water resistance in sections formed by cutting.

A leather-like sheet composed of a micmfine-fiber entangled body made of bundles of microfine fibers and an elastic polymer impregnated therein. The bundles of microfine fibers are composed of microfine monofibers having an average cross-sectional area of 0.1 to 80 µm 2 and have an average cross-sectional area of 40 to 400 µm 2 . The bundles of microfine fibers exist in a density of 600 to 4000/mm 2 on a cross section taken along the thickness direction of the microfine-fiber entangled body. The elastic polymer contains 30 to 100% by mass of a polymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The polymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomer is composed of a soft component having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of less than -5 °C, a crosslinkable component, and optionally a hard component having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of higher than 50 °C and another component. The polymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomer is bonded to the microfine fibers in the bundles of microfine fibers. The leather-like sheet has a flexibility and hand such as dense feeling each resembling natural leathers and a high quality appearance. The leather-like sheet is highly stable in quality such as fastness and surface abrasion resistance and excellent in practical performance.
