A cylinder lock having a body and a modified cam, the cylinder lock being adapted for moving an external element arranged to engage the modified cam, so that the external element slides axially on the cylinder lock body. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive cylinder lock is designed to utilize a helical cam which engages a movable sleeve, and this design is referred to as the HC cylinder lock. When operated by rotating the appropriate key within it, the movable sleeve can be moved in a linear fashion along the length of the HC cylinder lock thus converting rotational motion of the key to axial motion of the external element. This axial motion is used to position at least one locking bolt, of which the sleeve itself may be one, for the function of locking or unlocking a device. The streamlined design of the inventive HC cylinder lock enables efficient placement of a door lock within the hollow volume of a door.

A latch mechanism for a door of the like includes first and second rotatable latch operating members (20,22) which operate a latching bolt or the like. An axially movable square section spindle (16) extends through complementary holes in both members. In an engaged position, the spindle operates both members when rotated. In a disengaged position, a circular section portion (34) of the spindle registers with a hole in one of the members (22). In the disengaged position the bolt can be operated by the first member (20) even though the second member may be prevented from rotating by means of pins(28). The spindle (16) can be moved between engaged and disengaged positions by a push-rod extending out of the door. Thus, when the second member is locked it may be overridden by actuation of the rod and the first member.

In order to enable a turning of a key of a lock cylinder onto a driven member (shaft 36) in a lock cylinder only when a proper key is inserted, yet to prohibit the turning in case of an overload, an overload lock is arranged therebetween. The driven member (shaft 36) should specifically actuate functions in the vehicle only if the correct key is used. A threshold rotation torque determines the change between the normal and the overload state. In order to improve the lock cylinder, it is suggested that a disengaging lever (40) is mounted in the cylinder housing (30) in a pivotable manner (42) and can be displaced between two pivot positions in a radial plane defined by the longitudinal axis (13) of the lock cylinder. A locking cam (41) belonging to the overload lock is arranged on the free arm end of the disengaging lever (40). When the disengaging lever pivots, a carrier (50) pivots in unison, the carrier having a coupling part which engages in a counter coupling part of the cylinder core (10) during normal function. The disengaging lever (40) and the carrier (50) form a common pivot unit. In case of overload, wherein a rotation of the cylinder core is forced, the carrier (50) is decoupled from the cylinder core (10).
