The resaw (1) includes a frame (3) having at least one head (25). The head includes a horizontal mounting beam (43) with four wheels (57,59,61,63) operatively mounted to the mounting beam (43). The wheels comprise an inner pair of wheels (61,63) and an outer pair of wheels (57,59). The centers of the inner wheels are vertically offset from the center of the outer wheels. A band saw blade (29) is mounted about the four wheels to define a first blade portion (65) and a second blade portion (67) which are spaced from each other. A single head (25) can simultaneously make two slices in a cant (19) to cut two or more boards from the cant. The inner and outer wheels can be moved as a unit relative to the path of travel of a cant and the inner wheels can be moved relative to the outer wheels to enable adjustment of the thickness of the boards cut from the cant. In variations, the resaw can have two heads (25,27) and each head can have one, two, or more blades (29,31). With a two head resaw, four slices can simultaneously be made in the cant. Where each of the two head resaw has two band blades, eight slices can simultaneously be cut in the cant.

An apparatus and method for slitting a stack (15) of folded corrugated paperboard boxes utilizes a thin slitting blade (46) mounted for continuous movement through a slitting station and defining a vertical slitting plane. A stack supporting table (26) straddles the slitting blade (46) to support a stack (15) of boxes in a stand-by position above the blade (46). Adjustable upstream and downstream squaring devices (34, 35) are operative to square and center the stack (15) in the cutting plane and a vertically reciprocable ram (66) operates to move the stack (15) and the supporting table (26) downwardly past the blade (46) against a table biasing force to slit the stack (15) into two half-size stacks (47). The squaring devices (34, 35) are operable to re-square the slit half-size (47) prior to conveyance out of the slitting station. The slitting run of the continuous blade (46) operates in a rigid blade holder (66) which is adjustable to compensate for blade wear and to maintain the cutting edge of the blade (46) in a fixed plane.

A saw-blade tensioning arrangement for band saws and like machines which includes a hydraulic cylinder (6) having arranged for movement therein a piston (7) which is intended to activate saw-blade tension control means (2). The blade tension is, in this way, dependent on the hydraulic pressure in the cylinder. The arrangement includes means for pneumatically regulating the hydraulic pressure, these means including a pneumatically operated pressure booster (10) and means (19, 20, 35) for activating the pressure booster at the end of a working stroke of the hydraulic piston, therewith to tension the saw blade to the desired working tension, this working tension being determined, inter alia, by the blade width.

A second hydraulic piston cylinder member (17) is arranged in the block element (25), parallel with the axis of rotation (36) of the bar holder, the piston cylinder member (17) being arranged to abut against the bar holder (24) in order to secure the unit (22) to the bar holder (24) and eliminate the clearance produced by said gap.
