In order to guide a cutting band in a band saw machine in a more efficient manner one or two pivotal band guides (1) according to the invention are fitted as close as possible to the cutting place. Each guide (1) is in two parts and designed as a wheel which can run on bearings (5). The wheel consists of two guide rings (2, 3) with side faces (10) forming lateral guides for the side faces of the saw blade (17) or the knife blade (11). At the rear the cutting blade is provided with a bottom guide in the form of a face (13, 19). This may be configured as the periphery of the rings (12, 18, 21). Finally, one or a number of tolerance rings (14, 20) are inserted, permitting adjustment of the distance between the sides faces (10) on a continuous basis. Hereby is obtained a rotary guide (1) which is not exposed to irregular wear since the entire guide is easily brought to rotate when the cutting blade is moved. This gives a hitherto unobtainable good guiding since the cutting band is being guided in all directions of tension during cutting, whereby deformation of the band is avoided. This gives a very accurate guiding without noise and with reduced wear of the cutting band.

An apparatus and method for slitting a stack (15) of folded corrugated paperboard boxes utilizes a thin slitting blade (46) mounted for continuous movement through a slitting station and defining a vertical slitting plane. A stack supporting table (26) straddles the slitting blade (46) to support a stack (15) of boxes in a stand-by position above the blade (46). Adjustable upstream and downstream squaring devices (34, 35) are operative to square and center the stack (15) in the cutting plane and a vertically reciprocable ram (66) operates to move the stack (15) and the supporting table (26) downwardly past the blade (46) against a table biasing force to slit the stack (15) into two half-size stacks (47). The squaring devices (34, 35) are operable to re-square the slit half-size (47) prior to conveyance out of the slitting station. The slitting run of the continuous blade (46) operates in a rigid blade holder (66) which is adjustable to compensate for blade wear and to maintain the cutting edge of the blade (46) in a fixed plane.

The invention relates to a foam cutting machine having an continuous, band-shaped knife (11) and having an oscillating device (24) which drives the knife in the knife plane and perpendicular to the knife edges in an oscillating manner. The effect of a serrated or waved knife is thus achieved although the knife has a straight front knife edge (11b). Said type of knife provides the option of resharpening and does not have the disadvantages of wave-shaped or serrated knives.

A cleaner for a band bread slicing machine includes a plurality of band scraper units (42) mounted on an elongated support rod (44). Each scraper unit (42) includes a pair of fixed, resilient scraper blades (94, 96) positioned to engage the sides of a band blade (18) of the slicer to guide and scrape the blade (18). A resilient scallop scraper (120) blade is supported adjacent the resilient scraper blades (94, 96). The scallop scraper (120) engages a beveled or scalloped postion of the band blade. Actuators position the scraper units relative to the bands (18) and move the scallop scraper into and out of engagement with the band (18).
