The fluid treatment system includes at least one radiation source having a radiation emitting surface and at least one nozzle element having a fluid discharge opening spaced from the radiation emitting surface. The fluid discharge opening is configured to impinge fluid to be treated on to at least a portion of the radiation emitting surface. The fluid treatment system is well suited to treating low transmittance fluid.

A method for preparation of human milk to be stored comprises the steps of - subjecting the human milk (M) to a treatment for inactivating or reducing an amount of biological contaminants in the human milk (4, 5), - freezing (3, 7) the human milk and forming flakes of the human milk and - collecting the frozen human milk flakes (F) in a container (6). This method and an according apparatus enable storing human milk for later use in a very small dose, i.e. in the form of pasteurized frozen milk flakes.

Method for treating unpackaged biological liquids, particularly milk or its derivatives, having a microbacterial and spore content, comprising the following operative steps: (a) separating the biological liquid into a fatty fraction having a higher concentration of fatty matter and a non-fatty fraction having a lower concentration of fatty matter compared to the initial concentration; (b) heat treating the non-fatty fraction; (c) cooling the non-fatty fraction to a temperature close to the storage temperature (Tc); (d) preheating the fatty fraction to a predefined temperature (Ts); irradiating the fatty fraction with electromagnetic radiation for a predefined time (tirr); (f) cooling the fatty fraction to a temperature close to the storage temperature (Tc); (g) mixing the individually treated fractions so as to reconstitute said biological liquid. The electromagnetic radiation is in the range of radio-frequencies having frequencies of less than 1 GHz.

Method and apparatus for preferential heating of a material are based on exposing the material to high intensity, pulsed, non-ionising electromagnetic radiation. The method can destroy microorganisms, sterilize packaging, or sterilize moist food. An embodiment uses microwave radiation with pulse duration of less than 0.1 second with an average power of at least 1 kW to sterilize open-ended metal cans prior to packaging.
