摘要: A conventional single faced corrugated board manufacturing plant is modified to produce corrugated board having two fluted mediums bonded at their flute tips. In addition to the existing corrugating rolls (10, 11) a further pair of corrugating rolls (34, 35) synchronized with the existing pair are provided so that the corrugated mediums (22, 23) are contacted at their flute tips. An additional mill roll stand is provided for the second fluted medium. A carrier roll (36) is provided adjacent to the pairs of corrugating rolls to take off the bonded fluted mediums and provide support and prevent uncontrolled movement of the flute to flute structure during the development of the adhesion bond. Adhesive applicators (37) are provided to apply adhesive to one of the mediums prior to the flute tip to flute tip bonding and to coat the flute tips of the bonded fluted structure on the carrier roll for bonding to the inner (21). An additional guide roll (38) is provided to allow tangential approach for the liner onto the flute to flute structure carried by the carrier roll. Radiant energy is used to assist in bonding the inner to the flute to flute tip structure enabling a low pressure bonding technique to be used.

摘要: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for providing raw edge protection on the edge (12) of a paper laminate (10) such as a polyethylene-paper- polyethylene-aluminum foil-polyethylene laminate (14, 16, 18,20,22). Such laminates are useful in forming paperboard containers for foodstuffs or other products which are to be protected against the entry of moisture, bacteria, or other contaminants. According to the method and apparatus of this invention, a laser beam is employed to burn away the exposed edge of the paperboard layer of the laminate as it moves relative to the laser beam. After removal of a strip of the paperboard from an edge of the laminate, the remaining areas of the laminate (40, 42) are pressed together and sealed as by the application of heat. In a modified method, a polyethylene powder stream, or a polyethylene filament, is continuously melted and flows over the remaining edge (44) of the paperboard, to thus seal it. The invention may be applied to a continuous web or single blank of the paper laminate.

摘要: Fire resistant articles comprising a normally combustible carrier element having applied thereto sodium silicate which is heat foamable to produce a further element capable of resisting the passage of fire and/or heat therethrough in the event the article is exposed to fire and/or heat. Certain compatible materials like fumed silica, calcium carbonate, low melting point glass fines and a bicarbonate compound may be added to improve the properties of the articles. In a typical embodiment the articles comprise corrugated container-wall structures, in which the sodium silicate layers (24, 27, 30) serve as the fire and/or heat barrier, laminating adhesive, and provides structural strength. A graphite felt layer (340) may be laminated to the outer surface of exterior liner board (336) thereby providing electrical shielding protection to the contents of a box manufactured from the structures. The corrugated boards are produced in an apparatus comprising fluting rollers (120, 122) of which the second one (122) is unheated and preferably water cooled. The apparatus further comprises devices (124, 136, 236) by which I sodium silicate is applied to the fluting medium (100), resp. to the liner boards (126, 216).

摘要: A sheet of material is passed through meshing rotary shearing and forming dies to form rows of convolutions 16 which in each row are separated by an undeformed neutral zone N between each pair of adjacent convolutions. The rows are staggered so that the peak of a convolution in one row coincides with the troughs in adjacent rows and vice versa but the neutral zones coincide to maintain the integrity of the expanded web. The expanded web 12 can then be laminated to a plane sheet 11. The resulting structure is useful as a cigarette wrapper which is wrapped around a tobacco rod through which the longitudinal air flow is as shown by the arrow. The dimensions and periodicity of the convolutions can be adjusted to control air flow through the wrapper.
