A porous sintered aggregate consists of a sintered product of a raw mixture comprising 1) a material the main components of which are carbon and the oxides of Si, Al, Fe and Ca in proportions: Si0 2 : 35-70 per cent; Al 2 O 3 : 15-35 per cent; Fe(calculated as Fe 2 O 3 ): 3-30 per cent; CaO: 1-10 per cent; and C: 1-15 per cent; and 2) fine calcareous material. The composition of the raw mixture is such that the weight ratio of total CaO over total Al 2 O 3 in the mixture lies within the range 0.35 - 1.00, the weight ratio of total Si0 2 over total CaO is greater than 1.5, and the weight ratio of total SiO 2 over total Al 2 O 3 is greater than 1.0. A process for manufacture of such a product is described.

A method, wherein spent residue from a fluidized combustion bed of the type in which lime or limestone particles are suspended in a fluidized medium and a carbonaceous fuel is ignited proximate said fluidized medium to capture therein substantial amounts of SOx which is generated upon ignition of said carbonaceous fuel, the lime component of which has been substantially hydrated by mixing with water, and pozzolanic material, such as pulverized coal combustion system fly ash, are incorporated in a cementitious mix. The mix is cast into desired shape and cured. If desired, the shape may then be crushed so as to result in a fluidized bed combustion residue-fly ash aggregate material or the shape may be used by itself. The method enables a commercially acceptable way of disposing of the spent bed residue by incorporation thereof in a high-strength concrete-like material.

The invention relates to thermally insulating, fire resistant material and its production. A problem associated with fire resistant material comprising refractory material and a binder is the tendency, in use, of the material to disintegrate due to bond failure. In the invention, hollow particles of a glass or of a ceramic are combined with a binder to give a material where the proportions of binder are such that the material is capable of deformation at high temperatures (e.g. up to 1100°C) without fracture or loss of cohesion. A specific example consists of 93% by weight of hollow spherical particles of pulverised fuel ash and 7% by weight of sodium silicate binder. The material is particularly useful in the protection of steel structures.

After drying and heating, the result is a nonsolvable product which might be applied as building-stone, aggregate or filter. The manufacturing of building materials and additional materials from the components fly-ash and harbour silt, or fly-ash and silt separately. When adding sodium hydroxide (NA.OH) and aluminium powder, a foam-reaction is caused and after being dried and heated this results in a non-dissoluble product which may find its application as a light-weight building stone, an aggregate or a filter.
