A sodium-azide-free gas-generating composition includes an oxidizable inorganic fuel, such as a metal, and an oxidizing agent containing oxygen and a metal. The fuel and the oxidizing agent are selected such that water vapor is produced upon reaction between the inorganic fuel and the oxidizing agent. Although a number of inorganic fuels can be employed, a suitable fuel can be a transition metal, another element such as silicon, boron, aluminum, magnesium, and intermetallic compound, hydrides of these metals and mixtures thereof. Suitable oxidizing agents are selected from basic metal carbonates and basic metal nitrates. The fuel and oxidizing agent are selected such that substantially nontoxic gases are produced such as mixtures of water vapor and either carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

Provided herein are methods and systems of producing hydrogen using ammonia borane, which has a high hydrogen density while being stable and easily stored. Ammonia borane may be exothermically reacted with a strong oxidizer, such as a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. The reaction between ammonia borane and the strong oxidizer may occur spontaneously and may produce heat. Unreacted ammonia borane may be exposed to and thermally decomposed using the heat produced during the exothermic reaction between ammonia borane and the strong oxidizer. The heat may be retained by performing the reactions in a vessel or reactor including a material capable of retaining the heat. A high gravimetric hydrogen yield is obtained from the reaction of ammonia borane with hydrogen peroxide and the thermal decomposition of unreacted ammonia borane. Hydrogen production using the methods and systems may yield a high gravimetric hydrogen content of at least about 10%.

The present invention mainly relates to solid compounds capable of generating hydrogen by a self-sustaining combustion reaction. The composition thereof contains borazane and/or polyaminoborane and at least one inorganic oxidant, preferably selected from ammonium nitrates, alkaline nitrates, alkaline earth nitrates, metal nitrates, metal oxides, oxidants of the dinitramine family, and mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to the generation of hydrogen by the self-sustaining combustion of at least one such compound.

The subject matter of the present invention is a pyrotechnic process for providing very highly pure hydrogen (G) and also a device (100) suitable for implementing said process. Said process comprises: the combustion of at least one solid pyrotechnic charge which generates hydrogen-containing gas (4a, 4b, 4c, 4d) for the production of a hot hydrogen-containing gas (G1) under pressure, containing at least 70% by volume of hydrogen; and the purification of at least one part of said hydrogen-containing gas (G1) under pressure, by passage through a metallic membrane for separating the hydrogen (9) maintained at a temperature above 250°C, advantageously between 300 and 600°C, so as to obtain, at the outlet of said membrane (9), a hydrogen-containing gas (G) containing at least 99.99% by volume of hydrogen.
