A chromatographic method for separating a sugar from a sugar-containing liquid feed mixture by: contacting the liquid feed mixture with a stratum of cation exchange resin comprising a crosslinked copolymer matrix functionalized with sulfonic acid groups, and recovering a first product stream from the stratum that has a higher purity of the sugar than present in the liquid feed mixture. The method is characterized by the stratum of cation exchange resin including: i) at least 80 wt % of cation exchange resin including alkaline earth counter ions, and ii) at least 5 wt % of cation exchange resin including alkali earth counter ions.

The present invention pertains to a chromatographic process for separating saccharide monomers from dimers and/or saccharide trimers from dimers. The separation is effected with a cation exchange resin. If saccharide monomers are separated from saccharide dimers the cation exchange resin has a high degree of crosslinking. If the saccharide dimers are separated from saccharide trimers the cation exchange resins has a low degree of crosslinking.

In chromatographic separation in a plurality of steps with a chromatographic separator packed with an ion exchanger used as at least part of chromatographic packing, at least part of the ionic form of at least part of the ion exchanger is changed to an ionic form fit for separation of components to be separated in each step to effect chromatographic separation, whereby a starting fluid material containing at least 3 components can be efficiently separated into at least 3 fractions. A preferred example of the chromatographic separator comprises a group of packing bed units (1, 2, ...10) linked in endless series to form a circulation flow path (10, 11, 1, 2, ...10), and is provided with a shutoff valve (2) at a position of the circulation flow path, starting fluid material feed means (30), desorbent feed means (31) and 2-fraction withdrawal means (12, 14) for all the packing bed units (1, 2, ...10), and a single-fraction withdrawal means (13) connected to the circulation flow path on the upstream side of the shutoff valve and without any packing bed unit therebetween.

The process and the related equipment are based on two resin packed ion exchange columns (4, 10) through which the juice (S) to be defecated is flowing. In the first column (4) the juice is partially defecated through ion exclusion thus producing molasses (M) with a satisfactory commercial value, while the defecation process is completed in the second column (10) with separation of the non-sugar residue and recovery of various sugars and non-sugars having a high market value. Treatment on two columns reduces processing time and/or the quantity of resin necessary as compared with one column processes. Polluting waste water is thus completely eliminated.
