    摘要: In order to (i) minimize the amount of liquid coolant reaching a condenser or radiator of an internal combustion engine or the like in which the coolant is permitted to boil and the vapor used as a vehicle for removing heat, and to (ii) simultaneously maintain the level of liquid coolant in the jacket above the combustion chambers, exhaust port and valves of the engine; a drain passage is provided between (a) the collection chamber of a manifold into which the vapor is discharged from the coolant jacket, via manifold runners, and (b) the coolant jacket. This drain passage passage by-passes the runners and vapor discharge ports of the coolant jacket, connects with the coolant jacket at a level lower than the engine structure which is subject to high heat flux and houses a coolant level control sensor.

    摘要: In order to simplify the control and construction of the cooling system in a manner which avoids the need for costly electromagnetic valves and control circuits such as microprocessor and the like, a reservoir in which coolant is stored is arranged to constantly communicate with a lower portion of a cooling circuit which includes the coolant jacket and the radiator in which the coolant vapor is condensed. A small coolant pump returns condensate from the radiator to the coolant jacket in response to a temperature sensor disposed in the coolant jacket. An overflow conduit is arranged to return excess coolant pumped into the coolant jacket via a conduit which leads from an overflow port provided in the cylinder head at a predetermined height above highly heated structure of the engine to the base of the radiator and thus maintain a predetermined depth of liquid coolant in the jacket. A cooling fan or like device is operated in response to a second temperature sensor disposed at the bottom of the radiator.

    摘要: A small capacity pump continously driven by a mechanical connection with the crankshaft or the like of the engine, is arranged to induct coolant from both the radiator wherein the coolant vapor is condensed to its liquid state and a liquid/vapor separator disposed in the vapor transfer conduit via which the coolant vapor is conveyed to the radiator from the coolant jacket. In order to maintain the cylinder head exhaust valves and ports immersed in a predetermined depth of liquid coolant a level sensor is disposed in the coolant jacket and the output used to open and close a valve fluidly interposed between the radiator and the pump. If required a second valve can be interposed between the pump and the separator and arranged to be closed when the first one is open.

    摘要: In order to assure that the cooling system of a so called "vapor cooled" type engine remains free from contaminating air, a control system is provided which enables air to be purge both during initial engine warm-up and during normal operation if the temperature of the coolant rises excessively. The control system further provides for the temperature of the coolant to be varied with factors such as engine speed and engine load and further provides that, before the system is switch to an "open state" when the engine is stopped, the coolant temperature is caused to rapidly fall via continued operation of a cooling fan or like device for a brief time, so as to eliminate any super atmospheric pressures which would otherwise tend to displace large quantities of the coolant out of the system.

    摘要: In order to minimize the size of an auxiliary coolant reservoir and to ensure that the appropriate control is executed over the system during all phases of engine operation, a control circuit including a microprocessor is arranged to selectively induce a non-condensible purge mode, cold start mode, normal operation mode, overcooled mode and a system shut- down mode. The latter mentioned mode allows for the coolant to cool down before the system is switched from closed to open states and minimizes the tendency for coolant to be displaced from the system in large quantities under the influence of a positive pressure which tends to prevail at the time the engine is stopped. Control of the various modes is facilitated by a valve/conduiting arrangement which features three basic conduits each of which include one ON/OFF type electromagnetic valve.

    摘要: To increase the structural rigidity of outer walls of a cylinder block wherein the coolant jacket thereof is adapted to receive coolant in a liquid state and discharge same in a gaseous state, a measure is employed wherein walls of the cylinders are integrally connected at their peripheral portions and a plurality of ribs are disposed in the coolant jacket with their laterally opposed sides integrally connected with the cylinder walls and the outer walls. Each rib extends essentially along the length of the cylinders from the bottom portion of the coolant jacket thereby to form a plurality of cells in the coolant jacket.
