A miniature device for moving a reference plane or point on an axis in rotational or x-y directions, particularly useful for two dimensional beam scanning. The device consists of a ferromagnetic ring surrounding a magnetic core which is flexibly mounted and suspended within it. Electric current at various frequencies is supplied to coils wrapped about and mounted within the ring. The core provides a magnetic field within the ring which defines its coordinates with respect to the ring and its coils and interacts with current applied to the coils to produce torque. The flexible mount suspending the core within the coils permits relative movement therebetween in response to the varying current. Motion of the core may be used to position optical elements. In one embodiment, a mirror is attached to the core and a laser beam reflected off the mirror produces a variety of two dimensional scan patterns. The shape of the patterns is determined by selection of the frequencies of current applied to the coils.

An aircraft spring assembly (26) comprising a spring (28), an end fitting (30) including a spring engagement formation (30b, 32b) arranged to be mechanically coupled to an end region (28a) of the spring and a coupling formation for coupling the spring assembly to an aircraft anchor point. The coupling formation includes a load bearing surface (30e) via which loads from the anchor point can be transmitted into the spring assembly. The assembly further comprises an integral damping member (30f, 34, 36) provided within the load path between the load bearing surface of the coupling formation and the end region of the spring.

The actuator includes a force transmitting reciprocating member (12) mounted for reciprocating movement along a path (18), and a centrifugally actuated brake (34) operatively connected to the reciprocating member (12) in a manner to be driven by and to limit the speed of the reciprocating movement of the reciprocating member (12) along the path (18).
