Provided is a sliding member which has a joining strength suitable for a circumstance to which a heavy load is applied, and which exhibits excellent abrasion resistance property. A sliding member 1 is provided with a supporting layer 2 that is configured to be composed of an iron-based metallic material and a sliding layer 3 formed on a surface 2a of the supporting layer 2 and configured to be composed of a copper-based metallic material. The surface 2a of the supporting layer 2 and the sliding layer 3 are configured to have non-flat surfaces, and a sliding surface 3a formed on the surface of the sliding layer 3 is configured to have a non-flat surface. The sliding layer 3 is formed on the roughened surface 2a of the supporting layer 2 by thermal spraying. The surface of the sliding layer 3 is subjected to shot blasting treatment and then, is provided with the sliding surface 3a which has an uneven surface having an arithmetic average roughness (Ra) of more than 0 µm but 2.0 µm or less, a ten-point average roughness (Rz) of more than 0 µm but 7.5 µm or less and a surface hardness (Hv) of 150-250, and which slidably supports an object to be slid.

A sliding surface is formed on a surface of a sliding layer that slidably supports an object to be slid. The sliding surface is then shot-blasted and is formed to have an uneven shape exhibiting an arithmetic average roughness (Ra) of more than 0 to 2.0 µm, a ten-point average roughness (Rz) of more than 0 to 7.5 µm, and a surface hardness (Hv) of 150 to 250.
