The burner (1) has a suction pipe (9) with a blower (16) and a regulation member (10) which varies the cross-section of the suction pipe (9). A flow measuring apparatus (12) provided with a sensor (14) measures the air stream circulating in the suction pipe (9). On one hand it is necessary to supply a predetermined air amount (vo) for an optimum combustion of the fuel and on the other hand the natural chimney draught which determines the air flow rate is subjected to strong variations due to weather conditions which may be so important that in extreme cases the direction of the chimney draft may even be reversed. The sensor (14) is connected to a regulating device (16) which on one hand acts on the member (10) and/or on the control (7) of the blower (16) so as to maintain the optimal air flow independently from atmospheric influences. As a function of those influences and therefore of the natural chimney draugth, the cross-section of the passage of the member (10) is enlarged or reduced by the regulating device (15), or the blower (16) is switched on or off or its rotational speed is modified or its orientation is reversed.

In a domestic or small commercial heating boiler the combustion air which is supplied by a fan (38) to the burner (32) is shut off by draught control means (48) when the fan (38) is not running. This prevents loss of heat while the burner is not firing. Preferably the draft control means is a gravity biassed flap (48) in the path of combustion air to the burner. To reduce the need for cleaning, an air inlet (44) to the boiler is provided with a filter (70) to clean the air wich enters.

Disclosed are a system and a method for precisely controlling an air fuel ratio of an oil burner, which is extensively used in a household boiler, an industrial boiler, or a heater, using an air pressure sensor. The system includes a power supplying part, a fan for supplying air required for combustion of the oil burner by receiving driving voltage from the power supplying part, a fan driving part serving as a controller which drives the fan, an air pressure sensor, which is installed at a side of a flow path of air supplied from the fan so as to detect an amount of the supplied air, and a contro 1 part for outputting an optimum RPM of the fan to the fan driving part by comparing a signal detected by the air pressure sensor with preset data related to an optimum amount of air. The method includes the steps of detecting an amount of air being supplied through a fan using the air pressure sensor, calculating an optimum RPM of the fan using a controller by comparing a signal about the amount of the air with preset data related to an optimum amount of air, outputting the RPM calculated by means of the controller to a fan driving part, and rotating the fan according to the calculated RPM input into the fan driving part.

According to the invention, a blocking device (15) is allocated to one or more of the air nozzles (10, 11), respectively. Each of these blocking devices (15) can be used to selectively shut off the flow of air through the corresponding air nozzles (10, 11). This increases the range of modulation of the inventive device.

There is connected between the said conduit and the environment of the boiler or another appropriate space a control conduit and the control flow in the said control flow conduit is regulated by means of the known method based on the principle of cascade flow in which method there is arranged in connection with the conduit preferably a cylinder space having the end walls one of which being movable and which cylinder space is connected with the first opening (d' i ) against the comparison or inlet pressure (p,) and the second opening (d' 2 ) against the outlet pressure ( P3 ) or the pressure in the conduit and in which method the regulation of the internal pressure ( P2 ) of the cylinder space is effected through changing the mutual ratio of the areas of the openings Id' 1 , d' 2 ) by a piston (14, 19) joined to the movable wall and/or through controlling the mutual ratio of the areas of the openings from outside of the cylinder space so that the piston force needed for changing the cross-sectional flow area of the opening and needed for the regulation of flow at each moment and each pressure difference is equal to the sum of the forces opposing the said movement and the displacement of the movable wall and the piston at the same time is transmitted further to the control movement of the position of the valve's flap (51).
