    Abstract: Example embodiments include an optical assembly for an optical interrogation system having a single core or a multicore sensing fiber, a measurement fiber to couple light into the sensing fiber, and a reference fiber arranged with the measurement fiber as part of an optical interferometer. A beam splitter combines light from the sensing fiber and with light from the reference fiber. A polarization beam splitting prism separates the combined light into first polarized light and second polarized light that is orthogonal to the first polarized light. The optical assembly can substantially reduce the size, complexity, or cost associated with the traditional optical components in an optical interrogation system that it replaces. Other example optical assemblies are described. Embodiments describe optical interrogation systems using the example optical assemblies.

    Abstract: A light source device (1) includes a plurality of LEDs (3), a collimating optical system (5) disposed corresponding to the plurality of LEDs (3), a condensing optical system (7) that condenses light exiting from the collimating optical system (5), and a fly-eye integrator (10) into which the light exiting from the condensing optical system (7) is incident. Assuming that parallel light is defined as a virtual secondary light source (VS1), the parallel light being obtained from light traveling from a virtual primary light source (VS1) disposed at a back focus position of the condensing optical system (7) toward the condensing optical system (7) with a maximum effective acceptance angle (θL) of the fly-eye integrator (10) as a divergence angle and then passing through the condensing optical system (7), the virtual secondary light source (VS2) has a width that substantially coincides with a width of a secondary light source determined according to a shape of a light exit surface of the collimating optical system (5).

    Abstract: A method of generating a virtual image, including directing a light beam to a first side of an eyepiece, including transmitting the light beam into a first waveguide of the eyepiece; deflecting, by first diffractive elements of the first waveguide, a first portion of the light beam towards a second waveguide of the eyepiece, the first portion of the light beam associated with a first phase of light; deflecting, by protrusions on the first side of the eyepiece, a second portion of the light beam towards the second waveguide, the second portion of the light beam associated with a second phase of light differing from the first phase; and deflecting, by second diffractive elements of the second waveguide, some of the first and the second portions of the light beam to provide an exiting light beam associated with the virtual image that is based on the first and second phases.
