A voltage sensing device comprising a liquid crystal cell (10) electrically connected to a charged surface and having a light transmissivity varying with applied voltage. A light source (30) is directed through the liquid crystal cell, and a light detector (32) detects changes in the intensity of light directed through the cell and providing an output indicative of variations in voltage on the charged surface. Polarizers (24, 26), which polarize light from the light source directed through the liquid crystal cell, and analyze light exiting the cell, convert electro-optically induced phase changes into intensity changes. A saturation level biasing voltage is periodically applied to the liquid crystal cell to set the cell to a reference level, clearing the cell of transient polarization effects. A second reference liquid crystal cell may be provided, electrically coupled to a reference voltage. Signals from the charged surface derived by the liquid crystal cell connected to the surface are compared with reference signals derived by the reference cell prior to output of the signal to eliminate a time-based drift component from the output.

Each modulator is positioned along an axis (20) at a location that corresponds to a different depth plane. Each modulator reflects the first Image incident to it and transmits the succeeding images in the sequence. In a display system having N+1 depth plane images, each of N modulators comprises a variable optical retarder (34) and a liquid crystal chiral cell (36). The N modulators reflect left-circularly polarized light and transmit right-circularly polarized light. An N+1 modulator preferably comprises a liquid crystal chiral cell and reflects light incident to it. An alternative embodiment (50) develops full color images.

The present invention provides a glare-shielding type reflector having a photosensor block which can detect an incident angle of a luminous flux to the reflector and a glare-shielding layer which is divided into plural units and driven individually. A glare-shielding layer formed on a front surface of a mirror is divided into plural units and only the specified glare-shielding units are automatically put into a glare-shielding state, according to the incident angle of the luminous flux to the mirror.

A switchable color filter (11) includes three polarizing filters (12, 14 and 16) and two zero to substantially half-wave optical retarders (36 and 38) and is incorporated in a field sequential display system (10) to provide output states of light of three different colors to form an image in full color. Each one of four preferred embodiments (11,11 a, 11 b, and 11 c) of the switchable color filter provides the output states of three colors. The third and fourth preferred embodiments (11 and 11c) provide a fourth additional output state of, respectively, white light and light of a color which is a combination of two of the other output state colors. The optical retarders comprise nematic liquid crystal cells (100) having fast relaxation times to operate the display system at video rates.

A touch sensitive switch comprises a liquid crystal cell (1, 20) and means (Figure 4, or 8) for measuring capacitive changes when the cell is deformed by touch. The cell (1) comprises a layer (8) of a liquid crystal material between slides (2, 3) bearing electrodes (5, 6). Capacitive changes are detected for example by a comparator (Figure 4) or by a bridge circuit (Figure 8) which includes one or more cells (W, X, Y, Z). Touching one cell (W, X, Y, Z) unbalances the bridge. The area of cell that is touched may be coincident with (Figure 1) or separate from (Figure 3) a display area. For some types of cell extra sensitivity is achieved by maintaining a voltage across the cell between a critical and saturation value (Figure 5).
