    摘要: A multiple system data storage disk adapted for use with more than one type of computer. The disk is specially formatted to include software for each computer. The disk includes four discrete recognition headers, one for each target computer, placed at locations on the disk where each computer expects to begin its data loading operation. Each header further includes software directing the computer to step out to a discrete group of data tracks located elsewhere on the disk. Each data track group contains an identical program, written in each target computer's language. The disk is suited to video games for multiple computers. An alternative embodiment of the disk includes a header or headers containing a magnetic signature for copy protection. A disk can be produced with twenty-four such headers, one for each type of computer on the market, which can be mass produced to provide low-cost copy protection for all machines.

    摘要: Servo information is located within one of the data sectors of a record disk and is in the form of a pattern of radially spaced-apart segments (51, 52, 53, 61, 62, 63) , each segment overlapping a number of data tracks and comprising magnetic transitions which increase in frequency with distance from the centre of the disk to provide a digital head position error signal (PES). A similar segment (31, 32, 33) is located in each of the other data sectors around the perimeter of the disk to provide track profile information so that a head positioning system can compensate for disk runout and distortion. The disk drive can include means for eliminating the effect of the amplitude of the readback signal from the servo and profile segments on the head positioning system, thus ensuring a reliable PES at all radial locations on the disk and allowing interchangeability of disks among disk drives.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for checking performance and alignment of a disk drive designed for use with a floppy disk having a motor (16) driven linear positioning mechanism (14,21) for locating the read/write transducer (22) over the disk circular tracks. A digitally prerecorded diagnostic disk (50) has a series of precisely located special diagnostic tracks providing reference data for various alignment and response characteristics, both mechanical and electronic. A first group of tracks (track 0, 6, 32, 41, 71, 79) have sector ID blocks followed by progressively offset data blocks interspersed therein, with the range of the offset greater than the width of the track for which the disk drive is designed, which guarantees a read failure upon reading any track. These tracks are distributed radially across the surface of the disk at positions corresponding to each rotational phase position of the transducer stepper motor. A pair of indexed timing tracks (track 0, 79) having a fixed number of byte transitions permits testing of both the alignment of the index transducer and skew of the linear positioning device. A pair of special timing tracks affords reference data for head compliance measurement. A plurality of alternate offset tracks (track 44, 47, 50) located centrally of the recording band provides reference data for measuring the eccentricity of the drive spindle.

    摘要: An apparatus for recording flexible magnetic disks contained in envelopes comprises a mandrel engageable with a central zone of the disk to rotate the disk within the envelope, and a carriage 41 which is movable radially relative to the disk and on which there is mounted a pair of magnetic heads which oppose each other and make contact with the magnetisable surfaces of the disk. The carriage 41 is moved on guides 48 by a stepping motor shaft 44 by way of a pair of flexible strips 50, 51 which are partly wound about a hub 59 on the shaft 44. The ends of the strips are retained by longitudinal pins 70 loosely fitted into an eccentric bore in the hub 59 without the aid of screws. Pegs 71 on the pins 70 pass through holes in the ends of the strips 50 and 51 and are arrested against the motor shaft 44. A presser pad, which presses the envelope containing the disk against a reference surface of the apparatus, is lowered by an electromagnet which also causes the upper head to lower. A lost-motion form of coupling enables the pad and upper head to carry out independently adjustable travel strokes, so minimising any recoil.

    摘要: A magnetic disk file machine has a pair of opposed transducers, one transducer 150 of which is movable to engage a magnetic disk rotatably disposed in a magnetic diskette assembly in the machine against the other, a pressure plate opposed to a platen portion for holding the disk in a proper data transferring plane, and a manually operable knob 242 mechanically connected with the movable transducer and with the pressure plate for moving these parts between original positions, which are widely separated from the opposed parts to allow positioning of a magnetic diskette in the machine, and intermediate positions in which the spacing is less. The machine includes a solenoid mechanically connected with the movable transducer and with the pressure plate for moving these parts from their intermediate positions to final positions in which the movable transducer engages the disk and in which the pressure plate grips the diskette and holds the disk in a proper data transferring plane. The mechanical connections from the knob to the pressure plate and to the movable transducer include an oscillatable shaft 240 connected with the knob and having an eccentric portion 241 effective for moving these parts between original and intermediate positions. The solenoid is positioned on the other side of the machine to the oscillatable shaft, and a flexible cable 270 connected the solenoid with mechanism on the shaft side of the machine for moving the pressure plate and movable transducer between intermediate and final positions.
