A high-speed connector (10) for interconnecting circuit boards to a backplane or interconnecting a mother board to daughter board. The connector includes a housing (20), biasing elements (50, 60), a flex film (30), conductive elastomeric contact modules (35) and biasing modules (40, 45). The conductive elastomeric contact modules comprise a substrate which includes a plurality of individual conductive elastomeric contacts such as Metallized Particle Interconnect (MPI), or a polymer containing a plurality of conductive particles disposed therein. The first side of the conductive elastomeric contact modules interface to the flex film, and the second side of the conductive elastomeric contact module interface to a printed circuit board (PCB) set of contacts. Alternately, the conductive elastomeric contacts could be molded directly onto the flex film to eliminate the conductive elastomeric contact modules. The flex film includes conductive traces for providing electrical communication from a first conductive elastomeric contact module to a second conductive elastomeric contact module. The flex film could be realized as a multilayer film and include ground planes and/or strip line traces. Further, the conductive elastomeric contact modules could also include power and ground contacts.

An electrical connector is plugged onto an electrical device that has a hollow sleeve and an annular bonnet that has an outer electrical contact ring. The electrical connector includes an annular insulator, a lower elastomeric seal ring, a combination seal and contact member, a shielded conductor to carry an electrical signal out of the electrical connector and a flanged metal guard ring. The combination seal and contact member has a non-conductive elastomeric annulus and a conductive elastomeric portion that are co-molded to provide a unitary annular part. The annulus has a flanged upper end that is bonded to the flanged guard ring and a thinner lower end that has a plurality of axially spaced circumferential flexible sealing lips that biasingly engage the bonnet above the outer electrical contact ring. The conductive elastomeric portion is made of a non-conductive elastomeric material that has conductive particles widely dispersed throughout the material so that the conductive elastomeric portion exhibits a high electrical resistance in the uncompressed state that diminishes when the elastomeric portion is compressed by the outer electrical contact ring of the bonnet so that the conductive elastomeric portion acts as an electrical conductor that connects the contact ring and the conductor electrically. The lower elastomeric seal ring has a plurality of axially spaced flexible circumferential sealing lips that biasingly engage the bonnet so that the electrical connector sealingly engages the bonnet below as well as above the contact ring and the conductive elastomeric portion of the combination seal and contact member.

An improved flat flexible cable connector (1) for a flat flexible cable (6) includes a housing (4), terminals (3) and an actuator (5) movable between an initial engagement position and a final engagement position. The terminals include integral contact pieces (16) that are deflected by a pushing piece (8) of the actuator during movement of the actuator to its final engagement position. When the actuator is in the final engagement position, the cable is held in position by way of projections (21) on the housing which engage and retain corresponding engagement holes (20) of the cable, and, at the same time, the pushing piece of the actuator presses conductors of the cable against contact areas of the contact pieces (16) of the terminals. Movement of the actuator to its initial position puts the cable (6) in a releasable position by moving the actuator away from the contact pieces of the terminals and from the projections of the housing, thereby causing the contact pieces to lift the cable and release the projections from the engagement holes of the cable. Thus the cable can be pulled out from the cable connector when the actuator is in this initial position. The cable is positively held in the final engagement position and cannot be inadvertently released. The cable is therefore put in a releasable position by a single action.

A post (206) projects from the surface of the board. Each post has an enlarged head so that the post resembles a button. The head, when mated with a slot (220) on the connector, achieves a camming action resulting in a predetermined normal force versus insertin position relationship. A compliant member (224), preferably a fluid filled bladder, is supported by a beam member (208) and interposed between the beam member and the array of flexible circuit contact pads. A dovetail slot provided in the beam member is shaped to receive the corresponding post and has a precisely shaped cam race surface which engages the head of post. Such arrangement urges the contact pads on flexible circuit against the mating contact pads on the printed circuit board.

Each bed has two posts (32) and two assembly holes (34). Each post engages a pilot hole (24) of each terminal portion and an assembly hole of the other bed to orient and position the terminal portions of the flexible circuits with respect to the clamp members and the clamp members with respect to each other. Each clamp member also has two latch arms (40) and two lock nibs (42) for engaging respective lock nibs and latch arms of the other clamp member for attaching the clamp members to each other. The clamp members are preferably identical but may come in several versions (26, 28, 128, 228) that are interchangeable.
