A method for digestion of a crude terephthalic slurry obtained from oxidation of para-xylene in a bubble column reactor oxidation process is provided. The method is conducted in one or more bubble column reactors having one or more segregrated zones defined by horizontal baffles and particle flow through the digestion system is controlled to maximize conversion of partial oxidation intermediates to terephthalic acid while minimizing formation of other contaminant products. Temperature, oxygen flow and content as well as other process and equipment variables are controlled throughout the process to support formation of terephthalic acid. Also provided are bubble column digestion systems structured to conduct the digestion method.

Provided is a process for the production of high-purity trimellitic acid including subjecting a dimethylbenzaldehyde and/or an oxidized derivative of the dimethylbenzaldehyde to liquid-phase oxidation with molecular oxygen in an aqueous solvent containing a catalyst to produce trimellitic acid, in which: 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde and/or 3,4-dimethylbenzoic acid are/is used as a raw material; a catalyst containing 0.05 to 1 part by mass of one or more kinds of metals selected from the group consisting of cobalt, manganese, and nickel, 0.0001 to 0.0015 part by mass of metallic iron and/or iron obtained from a water-soluble iron salt, and 1 to 5 parts by mass of bromine with respect to 100 parts by mass of the aqueous solvent is used as the catalyst; and the liquid-phase oxidation is conducted at a temperature of 200 to 250°C. According to the process of the present invention, there can be provided high-quality, high-purity trimellitic acid with extremely small amounts of by-products such as an intermediate of oxidation, an addition compound, and an organobromine compound in high yield. In addition, the residual ratio of bromine used as a catalyst is high, and hence a production cost is curtailed.

The invention relates to a method for producing acid phthalic anhydride by catalytic gas phase oxidation of o-xylol or naphthalene or o-xylol/naphthalene mixtures with a molecular gas containing oxygen on a shell catalyst consisting of an inert, non-porous carrier material to which a coating of a catalytically active mass containing titanium dioxide and vanadium pentoxide is applied, wherein a catalyst is used whose catalytically active mass consists of 3 to 6 wt. % of vanadium pentoxide calculated as V2O5, 0.3 to 0.5 wt. % of a cesium compound calculated as Cs, and the remainder up to 100 wt. % of titanium dioxide anastase modification, in the presence or absence of a catalyst in the form of a shell differing from the above-mentioned catalyst which is used to produce gas-phase oxidation of o-xylol or naphthalene or o-xylol/naphthalene mixtures. In the presence of a second catalyst of this type, said catalyst is introduced to the reactor with the catalyst of the above-mentioned composition in a combined charge.

Aromatische Dicarbonsäuren der Formel in der R¹, R², m, n und X die in der Beschreibung genannte Bedeutung haben, können aus den zugrunde liegenden Bisphenolen der Formel hergestellt werden, wenn man die Bisphenole zunächst zu den Bissulfonaten umsetzt, die Sulfonatgruppen katalytisch mit H₂ entfernt und die dabei erhaltenen Kohlenwasserstoffe in bekannter Weise zweifach acyliert und die Acylgruppen zu den Carboxylgruppen oxidiert. Viele der so herstellbaren aromatischen Dicarbonsäuren sind neu.
