A method of preparation of lysate having alpha 2,3-sialyltransferase activity is disclosed. A cell culture having essentially no endogenous expression of eukaryotic alpha 2,3-sialyltransferase is infected with myxoma virus. The harvested triton lysates include significant quantities of a protein having eukaryotic alpha 2,3-sialyltransferase activity. Compositions having in vitro alpha 2,3-sialyltransferase activity and comprising a protein extract of lysates of the aforementioned lysates are also provided for.
