High molecular weight linear poly(propylene fumarate) having a relatively low polydispersity index by utilizing a relatively pure intermediate and a method for making same. Fumaryl chloride and propylene glycol are reacted in the presence of potassium carbonate. The potassium carbonate present in the reaction solution prevents the acid by-product from catalyzing reactions at the fumarate double bond. The bis(propyl fumarate) produced according to this technique can be transesterified using conventional processing steps to yield P(PF). The P(PF) produced from bis(propyl fumarate) produced according to the present method has a higher molecular weight and is purer than P(PF) produced using previously known techniques.

The present invention relates to a solvent-borne clearcoat material comprising at least one additive preparable by reaction of at least one alpha,omega-hydroxy-functionalized oligoester which possesses an OH number of 30 to 160 mg KOH/g, a theoretical carbon-carbon double bond content of 1 to 2.5 mmol/g, a number-average molecular weight of 1000 to 3000 g/mol and a weight-average molecular weight of 2800 to 10 000 g/mol, and at least one alkoxysilane which possesses an OH-reactive functional group, the sum of the weight-percentage fractions of all additives of the invention being 0.5 to 10 wt%, based on the total amount of the solvent-borne clearcoat material. The present invention further relates to a method for producing multi-coat paint systems and to multi-coat paint systems producible with the aid of said method. The invention further relates to the use of the above additive in solvent-borne clearcoat materials for improving adhesion.

The present invention provides a method for forming alkyd resin that includes reacting waste cooking oil, one or more aromatic or aliphatic polycarboxylic acids, and one or more polyols to form the alkyd resin. The present invention also provides an alkyd resin for use in coating formulations that is the reaction product of a waste cooking oil, a polyol, and an aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid. The present invention further provides a composition, in the form of a coating composition, that is a reaction product of reactants that include waste cooking oil and either water, an organic solvent, or mixtures thereof.
