It is intended to realize compactness in device size for a torque converter including a lock-up device using a centrifugal clutch. The present torque converter (1) includes a front cover (2), an impeller (10), a turbine (11), a stator (12) and a centrifugal clutch (4). The impeller (10) is coupled to the front cover (2), forms a hydraulic oil chamber together with the front cover (2), and includes an impeller core (17). The turbine (11), from which power is outputted, is provided in opposition to the impeller (10) and includes the turbine core (22). The stator (12) is disposed between an inner peripheral part of the impeller (10) and that of the turbine (11), and regulates the flow of hydraulic oil flowing from the turbine (11) to the impeller (10). The centrifugal clutch (4) is disposed in a space between the impeller core (17) and the turbine core (22), and directly transmits the power from the impeller (10) to the turbine (11) when a rotational speed of the turbine (11) is greater than or equal to a predetermined value.

When a speed ("forward", "second speed") suitable for a work is selected by a speed change operator, control means makes a modulation clutch engaged in response to the vehicle speed drop and makes a lock-up state where a lock-up clutch is engaged transit to a lock-up and modulation clutch slip state where the lock-up clutch is engaged while the modulation clutch slips. Subsequently, the control means performs a clutch control for causing a transition to both clutch slip state where the lock-up clutch and the modulation clutch slip in response to the vehicle speed drop, thence causing the transition to a torque converter operation state where the modulation clutch is engaged and the lock-up clutch is released.

The aim of the invention is to make it possible to accurately control a clutch (2) which is disposed inside a hydrodynamic torque converter (1). The aim is achieved by the fact that a pressure acting on the first face of a piston (4) is transferred to a control unit which adjusts a pressure acting on the second face of the piston (5) according to the pressure acting on the first face thereof. Said invention makes it possible to accurately adjust a piston force applied to the clutch (2) even at a fluctuating pressure inside the inventive hydrodynamic torque converter.

An automatic transmission includes: a gear transmission mechanism which can provide several speed stages according to selective supply of hydraulic pressures from a control system; a hydraulic fluid pump; a torque converter incorporating a lock up clutch which is selectively engaged or disengaged according to selective supply of pressure; a line fluid pressure control valve which receives a supply of pressurized hydraulic fluid from the pump and which provides a supply thereof, regulated to a line pressure level, to the control system; and a torque converter fluid pressure control valve which receives a supply of pressurized hydraulic fluid from the pump, and which provides a supply thereof to the torque converter as a source of torque converter pressure for filling it with hydraulic fluid and for selectively either engaging or disengaging the lock up clutch, this supply of torque converter pressure being regulated to a proper level by the torque converter fluid pressure control valve, when the supply of hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid pump is plentiful, diverting therefrom an overflow flow of hydraulic fluid, which, when available, is supplied to the lubricating system of the gear transmission mechanism, to which the torque converter hydraulic fluid pressure is also always supplied via a throttle element.
