The format of the Presence Information Data Format - Location Object (PIDF-LO) as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is extended or modified to accommodate, within the standard PIDF-LO format, an association of geospacial location to XML content on the Internet. A geospacial location is associated with Extensible Markup Language (XML) content on the Internet. The XML content is identified by a universal resource locator (URL), and associated with geospatial location information (either a specific location, zone, or direction). The URL is inserted into a section of a Presence Information Data Format-Location Object (PIDF-LO) compliant document as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In this way, geospacial location information is associated with Internet based XML content using a standard PIDF-LO format.

A modular scale adapted to receive a rigid platform for supporting a weight has a frame having a base and a pair of legs extending from the base. The scale has a plurality of support assemblies adapted to be carried by the frame. Each support has at least one sensor wherein each sensor is adapted to provide a reference value and an output relative to a portion of the weight received. A display shows a numerical value corresponding to the composite sensor value. In a preferred embodiment the frame is generally "U" - shape. The frame defines a central open area between the legs, wherein legs from other modular scales can be placed in the central open area of the modular scale for shipping. Each of the legs has a foot projecting towards each other, and the support assemblies are carried by the feet and the base. The frame is made of a plastic and of a rib construction such that the frame is relatively light weight.

A weighing scale (10) having a weighing platform (14), and mechanisms for permitting the weighing platform (14) to be pivoted upwardly from a lowered operational position to a raised non-operational position to reduce the required floor space therefor so that the weighing scale (10) can be conveniently transported to another location for use, where the weighing platform (14) is lowered to the operational position, or for storage thereof. Preferably, the weighing scale (10) is provided with a stabilizing member (16) to prevent the weighing scale (10) from tipping over when the weighing platform (14) is being raised or lowered, where the stabilizing member (16) can also be raised and lowered between an operational position and a non-operational position. Preferably, fold-away ramps (18, 20) are provided on opposite sides of the weighing platform (14) to provide easy access thereto. The pivotal movements of the weighing platform (14), the stabilizing member (16) and the ramps (18, 20) between the operational and non-operational positions are required to be performed in a predetermined sequence.

An improved method of assembling conventional scales, including bathroom scales, is provided by employing an improved spring for connecting the upper housing to the bottom pan. The upper housing may now be connected to the bottom pan with a simple downward force imposed on the improved spring thereby hooking the bottom of the spring to the bottom pan and mateably engaging the tapered top of the spring in an extruded hole in the upper housing. The improved spring is tapered at the top end to mateably engage the extruded hole in the upper housing and includes only one hook on the bottom end for engagement with the bottom pan. The improved spring enables easier and faster assembly of conventional scales thereby reducing labor and production costs.
