An apparatus for determining a depth map for an image comprises an image unit (105) which provides an image with an associated depth map comprising depth values for at least some pixels of the image. A probability unit (107) determines a probability map for the image comprising probability values indicative of a probability that pixels belong to a text image object. A depth unit (109) generates a modified depth map where the modified depth values are determined as weighted combinations of the input values and a text image object depth value corresponding to a preferred depth for text. The weighting is dependent on the probability value for the pixels. The approach provides a softer depth modification for text objects resulting in reduced artefacts and degradations e.g. when performing view shifting using depth maps.

In the case of printing at high addressability, where the cell size is smaller than the spot size, an image can be decimated in a manner that will limit the large accumulation of printed material. The proper decimation of the image will depend on the spot size, the physics of drop coalescence and the addressability during printing. A simple method of using concentric decimation is disclosed herein to enable this process.

An image processing apparatus can execute appropriate image processing while preventing increase in a capacity of a memory for storing a plurality of pieces of image data of different frequency bands. The image processing apparatus stores first image data having the highest frequency among the plurality of pieces of image data of different frequency bands in a state in which each pixel of the first image data includes a color component signal of any of a plurality of colors, on the memory, and further stores second image data whose frequency band is lower than that of the first image data on the memory, in a state in which a part of or all pixels of the second image data have color component signals of a plurality of colors.

The invention relates to a method for extracting marking patterns in relief on the surface of the sidewall of a tyre, comprising steps wherein: the three-dimensional image of said surface of the sidewall is captured by associating, with each pixel of the image, a greyscale value proportional to the elevation of said point in relation to said surface, in order to obtain a starting image ( f ); a series of successive morphological openings of the image of the starting surface (I), (II) and (III) are carried out iteratively by means of linear structuring elements of successively increasing sizes, oriented in the circumferential direction; the value of an image obtained after morphological opening with a structural element is subtracted from the value of the image obtained after morphological opening by means of the structuring element of an immediately smaller size (IV) and (V) in such a way as to obtain a succession of images flattened by the difference, initialising the procedure by the subtraction of the image obtained by means of the smaller-size structuring element from the starting image ( f ); a thresholding of the images flattened by the difference is carried out in order to obtain binary images (VI), (VII) and (VIII); and a set union is made of the values of each of the binary images to obtain a final binary image wherein only the marking patterns appear in relief (IX).
