Thus, the torque to be granted to the crankshaft 9 is set to be such a value that the rotation of the crankshaft 9 is stopped in the certain period to make an engine speed into zero. When the rotation of the crankshaft 9 is stopped, a time required for releasing a preset amount of gas from the combustion chamber 2 being in the first compression stroke after starting the engine is accurately kept in the period and pressure in the combustion chamber 2 is lowered. Consequently, there is no wastefully increased pressure in the combustion chamber 2 after resuming the cranking.
