This invention relates to a composite material that comprises a support member that has a plurality of pores extending through the support member and, located in the pores of the support member, and filling the pores of the support member, a macroporous cross-linked gel. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the composite material described above, and to its use. The composite material is suitable, for example, for separation of substances, for example by filtration or adsorption, including chromatography, for use as a support in synthesis or for use as a support for cell growth.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous body essentially consisting of polyarylene sulfide, whose pore size can be controlled from a nanometer order to a micrometer order, and which can be usefully used as a separation membrane and a battery separator by making use of its fine and uniform porous structure, and to provide a method for producing the porous body.SOLUTION: The porous body with the average pore size of 0.1 to 100 nm essentially consisting of polyarylene sulfide can be obtained by removing the oligomer (O) and/or monomer (M) from a mixture including a polymer (P) essentially consisting of a repeating unit (R) of 1 to 80 wt.% and an oligomer (O) essentially consisting of a repeating unit (R) and/or a monomer (M) giving a repeating unit (R) of 20 to 99 wt.%.
