PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solvent which is suitable for use in bromination of a styrene polymer, is environmentally useful, has a boiling point in the range of 80 to 90°C, is relatively inactive in a bromination process and allows for generation of a styrene bromide polymer product having to a nearly white color. SOLUTION: A polymer bromide obtained by bringing the styrene polymer and a brominating agent into contact under the presence of bromochloromethane as a Lewis acid catalyst and a reaction solvent is useful for production of a thermoplastic material provided with flame retardancy. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyalkylene terephthalate composition producing a molding that has flame retardancy of a UL-94 rating of V-O using both ca. 1.59 mm (1/16-inch) test specimen and ca. 0.794 mm (1/32-inch) test specimen without causing loss of other necessary and desirable physical and performance characteristics. SOLUTION: The polyalkylene terephthalate composition comprises a reinforcing amount of glass fiber dispersed therein and a flame retardant amount of a brominated styrenic polymer intimately mixed therein which, prior to mixing, contains less than 700 ppm Cl and has a TGA temperature for 1 wt.% loss which is 340°C or higher. SOLUTION: This compsn. comprises at least one organophosphorus component (A) which is halogen-free, consists of carbon hydrogen, phosphorus, and optionally at least one element selected from among nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, and contains at least 6wt.% phosphorus and a sulfur component (B which is elemental sulfur or a halogen-free org. polysulfide contg. at least 20wt.% sulfur and having at least one polysulfide bbond comprising at least three sulfur atoms. The compsn. in a wt. ratio of the sulfur of B to the phosphorus of A lower than 15 and in such amts. of A and B as to impart an LOI (according to ASTM D 2863-87) of 24 to a styrenic polymer is incorporated into the polymer before, during or after its formation to make it flame-retardant.
