    Abstract: An apparatus controls valve timing of an internal combustion engine that is provided with helical splines (50, 52) of an actuator (24) for varying a phase difference in rotation and an actuator (22a) for varying a cam profile and lift of an intake cam (27). When the apparatus for controlling valve timing and respective actuators are not driven, a valve timing can be automatically established, which can achieve a cold valve overlap &thetas;ov. Carburetion of fuel can be promoted in the combustion chamber and intake ports by the blow-back of exhaust resulting from the cold valve overlap &thetas;ov. A mixture is made into a sufficient air-fuel ratio without depending on an increase in fuel when cold idling, wherein combustion is stabilized still more than in a case where valve overlap is not increased, cold hesitation can be prevented from occurring, and drivability can be maintained in a comparatively favorable state.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for inspecting the laser welding quality for easily and reliably determining any defective welding or precursory phenomenon, and more correctly inspecting the welding quality. SOLUTION: Images of a place corresponding to the irradiation position of laser beams 1a and a place in a vicinity thereof between members 2a and 2b to be welded are taken in at high speed from the side during the laser lap welding. The distance from the position of a first luminous image corresponding to the laser beam irradiation position to the position of a bridge-like second luminous image formed on the back side of the welding direction in the taken-in image is obtained by an image processor 7. The obtained value is compared with a reference value by a determination circuit 8, and the result is specified as the inspection result of the welding quality. The value for obtaining the inspection result of "Good" by an experiment or the like in advance is selected as the reference value.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for evaluating a quality for evaluating, accurately and in real time, whether the joint with a welding bead is satisfactory or not when two stacked metal plates are irradiated with a laser beam for stack welding. SOLUTION: This method for evaluating the quality relates to the laser beam welding for welding two metal plates by shifting a welding torch 15 irradiating the laser beam along the surface of an upper metal plate 12 stacked on a lower metal plate 10. This method is composed of a detecting process and a judging process. In the detecting process, heat information is detected in at least one side of adjacent portions 42a, 43a on both sides of the fusion portion 41a on the surface of the upper metal plate in the welding. In the judging process, the width of the adjacent portion is obtained on the basis of the detected heat information to judge whether the joint is satisfactory or not by comparing the width with the pre-prepared reference value.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for inspecting the laser welding quality for correctly and rapidly inspecting the laser welding quality. SOLUTION: In the laser lap welding, the laser beams from a keyhole part of a work 2 are received by a high-speed camera 4 during the welding through a filter 3 with the frequency component range of plasma beams as the transmission band, and the plasma beam image of the keyhole part is taken in. The angle of inclination and the area of the plasma beam image to express acceptance/rejection of the welding display with high accuracy are obtained by an image processor 6. The obtained angle of inclination and area are compared with reference values by a determination circuit 7, and the result thereof is defined as the result of inspection of the welding quality.
