Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalytic trap for causing NOx included in an exhaust gas stream in which lean conditions and stoichiometric or rich conditions periodically appear alternately to undergo conversion.SOLUTION: A catalytic trap includes: (a) a catalytic trap material including (i) a refractory metal oxide support on which catalytic components effective in promoting reduction of NOx under the stoichiometric or rich conditions of the exhaust gas stream are dispersed and (ii) a NOx sorbent that includes one or more kinds of basic oxygen compounds of alkali metals selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, and potassium, which adsorbs NOx under the lean conditions of the exhaust gas stream, and which is effective in desorbing NOx under stoichiometric or rich conditions of the exhaust gas stream, wherein other components included in the catalytic trap material are inert to the basic oxygen compounds; and (b) a refractory carrier member the top of which is covered with the catalytic trap material and inert to the basic oxygen compound.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyzed soot filter that is formed on a wall flow substrate having internal walls coated with catalyst compositions.SOLUTION: The soot filter maintains a homogeneous flow of exhaust gases through internal walls of a substrate along the length of a filter due to a coating design, thereby allowing both the efficiency and the durability of a catalytic function to be increased over conventionally designed catalyzed soot filters. In addition, the catalyzed soot filter is provided with a first catalyst coating and a second catalyst coating for simultaneously treating gaseous components of the exhaust (e.g., CO and HC) and a particulate matter deposited in the filter.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful method for reducing contaminants in exhaust gas streams containing nitrogen oxides (NOx).SOLUTION: There is provided an emissions treatment system for an exhaust stream having a NOx storage reduction (NSR) catalyst with a NOx sorbent at a concentration of at least 0.1 g/inand a platinum group metal component dispersed on a refractory metal oxide support; and, an SCR catalyst disposed downstream of the NSR catalyst. The emissions treatment system is advantageously used for the treatment of exhaust streams from diesel engines and lean burn gasoline engines.
