PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 2-substitution-p-quinone derivative for treatment of oxidative stress diseases.SOLUTION: A method for therapy or suppression of oxidative stress diseases including mitochondrial diseases, energy treatment reduction disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and diseases due to aging; and a compound useful in the method of the present invention, such as a 2-substitution-p-quinone derivative as disclosed in the present description are disclosed. In another embodiment, the present invention encompasses a method for therapy or suppression of oxidative stress disorders such as mitochondria disorders, energy treatment reduction disorders, neurodegeneration disorders and diseases due to aging, for regulation of one or more energy biomarkers, for normalization of one or more energy biomarkers and for enhancement of one or more energy biomarkers, by administering a therapeutically effective amount or effective amount of one or more kinds of compounds of the formula I.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 4-(p-quinolyl)-2-hydroxybutane amide derivative for a treatment of mitochondrial diseases.SOLUTION: A method of treating or suppressing mitochondrial diseases, for example Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lacto acidosis and stroke (MELAS), Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is disclosed and compounds useful in the method, for example 4-(p-quinolyl)-2-hydroxybutane amide derivative are also disclosed. Methods and compounds useful for treating other disorders, for example amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and pervasive developmental disorders, for example autism are also disclosed. An energy biomarker useful in evaluation of metabolic status of a subject and effectiveness of the treatment is also disclosed.
