PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal substance having a high response speed by a liquid crystal composition comprising a new menthol compound used as a chiral agent. SOLUTION: The new menthol ester compound is represented by formula. The liquid crystal composition comprises the menthol compound and the liquid crystal substance. A liquid crystal display device uses the liquid crystal composition. The pitch of the chiral compound can be reduced as compared with that of generally used cholesterol nonanoate without increasing the viscosity of the liquid crystal composition by mixing the chiral compound in the liquid crystal composition. Thereby, the amount of the chiral compound used as a chiral dopant can be reduced as compared with that of the cholesterol nonanoate. Since the D-isomer and L-isomer are present in the menthol, either one of a right-hand twisting chiral compound and a left-hand twisting chiral compound can be synthesized.
