    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To complete the warming-up of a catalyst earlier while suppressing the passage of hydrocarbon through the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst for early change from second combustion into first combustion. SOLUTION: The second combustion is performed at starting an engine where the amount of an EGR gas to be supplied into a combustion chamber 5 is less than the amount of an EGR gas in conjunction with the generation amount of soot to be at a peak (t0-t2), and then the first combustion is performed where the amount of the EGR gas to be supplied into the combustion chamber 5 is more than the amount of the EGR gas in conjunction with the generation amount of the soot to be at the peak (t2 or later). During the second combustion at starting the engine, combustion is executed where the temperature of an exhaust gas from the combustion chamber 5 is relatively high without increasing hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas to make a EGR ratio zero for suppressing the amount of hydrocarbon to be supplied to exhaust gas cleaning catalysts 22, 26a (t0-t1), and then combustion is executed where hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas is increased and the temperature of the exhaust gas from the combustion chamber 5 is relatively high to make the EGR ratio gradually increase for increasing the amount of hydrocarbon to be supplied to the catalysts 22, 26a.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously prevent discharging soot, NOx, and unburned hydrocarbon, to save fuel at the time of deceleration driving, and to avoid the decreasing of catalyst temperature. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine simultaneously prevents discharging soot and NOx by executing low-temperature combustion wherein an EGR gas amount supplied into a combustion chamber 5 is more than the EGR gas amount at a peak of generation amount of soot, and wherein soot is hardly generated. And the internal combustion engine prevents discharging unburned hydrocarbon therefrom by oxidizing the unburned hydrocarbon discharged from the combustion chamber 5 with a catalyst 25. At the time of deceleration driving, fuel cutting is executed to save fuel. Furthermore, by executing the fuel cutting at deceleration driving and opening a throttle valve 20, decreasing temperature of the catalyst 25 owing to air passing through the combustion chamber 5 without contributing to combustion is prevented, so that reduction in oxidizing performance of the catalyst 25 with decreasing of the catalyst temperature is prevented.

SOLUTION: First combustion where the EGR gas amount in a combustion chamber 5 is more than the EGR gas amount with the peak generation of soot and thus generates little soot and second combustion where the EGR gas amount in the combustion chamber 5 is less than the EGR gas amount with the peak generation of soot are selectively performed. Switching from the first combustion to the second combustion is performed from the cylinder having the highest air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5, and switching from the second combustion to the first combustion is performed from the cylinder having the lowest air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber 5.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem such as generation of misfire by executing combustion wherein a rate of inert gas supplied in a combustion chamber is much more than a rate of inert gas in which a soot generating rate peaks and the soot is hardly generated, and inhibiting combustion wherein the soot is hardly generated when a period rotating speed is not less than prescribed rotating speed. SOLUTION: In a diesel engine 1, a part of exhaust gas is returned to an intake side for recirculation through an EGR passage 29 in order to suppressing the generation of NOx, a combustion temperature falls down in a combustion chamber with increase in an EGR gas rate, and a generating rate of NOx is reduced in association with reduction of the temperature. When an EGR rate exceeds some limit, a rate of smoke is rapidly increased. The EGR gas rate is further increased after the rate of smoke exceeds a peak level a condition becomes an operating condition in which soot is hardly generated. When period rotating speed exceeds not less than prescribed rotating speed during performing a combustion operation in a low temperature, the combustion operation is inhibited. It is thus possible to solve such a failure that a combustion condition is deteriorated and misfire is generated.

It is determined based on combustion pressure detected by a combustion pressure sensor 37 whether smoke or noise higher than a definite level is generated, or combustion is incomplete, and when it is determined that smoke or noise higher than a definite level is generated, fuel injection timing is delayed or an air-fuel ratio is made lean, and when it is determined that combustion is incomplete, fuel injection timing is advanced, or an air-fuel ratio is made rich.

When it is forecasted based on the frequency of change in loading obtained by a loading sensor 51 and a crank angle sensor 52, information on roads to go by, which is obtained by a navigation system 60 and the like, that the engine is in an operating condition high in the frequency of change-over between combustion at low temperature and second combustion, the execution of combustion at low temperature is prohibited, or the contraction of an operating area for performing combustion at low temperature recluses the frequency of change-over between combustion at low temperature and second combustion.
