PURPOSE:To perform compacting to the uniform density over the entire part in the stage of forming parts having different thicknesses in the central part and outside peripheral part with a compacting press, by inserting an inner punch for forming the central thin wall part into the cavity of a lower die, then packing raw material powder in the cavity and pressing the powder with upper and lower punches. CONSTITUTION:An outside cylinder 11 for supplying raw material powder is slidably mounted to the outside of an upper punch 1 consisting of an inner punch 2 and an outer punch 3 which are slidable with each other. The lower punch 6 in a die 4 is lowered, whereafter the punch 2 of the upper punch 1 is inserted into the cavity 18 of the die 4, and the punch 3 is moved upward. The powder supply port 12 provided in the cylinder 11 is exposed from the punch 3, and raw material powder 7 is packed in the cavity 18. The insertion position of the punch 2 is so set that the compression ratio attains the same compression ratio by the punch 3 in this case. The packed powder 7 is compressed by the descending of the punch 1 and the ascending of the punch 6, whereby a green compact 8 of the parts having the uniform density over the entire part and different thicknesses is compacted.

An apparatus for forming a block from carbon dioxide particle is configured to allow changing between precise thicknesses with very little downtime, utilizing both weight based and volumetric dosing. A spacer supports the lower ejection piston during block forming, with a shuttle discharging particles into the forming chamber while simultaneously pushing a previously formed block on to a conveyor. In one embodiment, the shuttle dosing cavity has a volume that is greater than the volume of the forming chamber volume, which allows more pellets, volumetrically, to be dosed into the dosing cavity than the volume of the forming cavity.
