PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable control of the distance between a playback head unit and a recording head unit and the surface of a recording medium, and detection of contact of a part of the medium facing surface with the recording medium, without interruption of protrusion of the part of the medium facing surface.SOLUTION: A magnetic head includes a playback head unit 8, a recording head unit 9, heaters 82, 92, an expansion layer 84 that makes part of a medium facing surface 2 protrude, and a sensor 85 that detects contact of the part of the medium facing surface 2 with the recording medium. The recording head unit 9 includes a main magnetic pole 15, a recording shield 16, and a return magnetic path section 30. The return magnetic path section 30 includes a yoke layer 31 located on the rear side in a direction of movement of the recording medium relative to the main magnet pole 15, a first coupling part 32 that couples the yoke layer 31 and the recording shield 16 to each other, and a second coupling part 35 that is located away from the medium facing surface 2 and couples the yoke layer 31 and the main magnetic pole 15 to each other.

A method and system are disclosed for compensating disturbance applied to a plant, such as a HDD component, controlled by a state control device having an estimator & controller. The estimator & controller is adapted to generate a first control signal in response to a state signal indicating an estimated state of the plant. A second control signal is generated by applying a transfer function H(s) having defined gain/frequency characteristics to a control signal derived from the first control signal. An overall control signal is generated in response to the second control signal and the control signal derived from the first control signal and applied to the plant.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a collision against a disk due to thermal deformation of near-field light emission element, and keep a constant distance between a heat-assisted magnetic recording head and the disk.SOLUTION: A heat-assisted magnetic recording device includes a control unit that obtains a deformation around a near-field light emission element 24 from a temperature sensor 26 for measuring a temperature around the near-field light emission element 24, a table in which a relation between the temperature around the near-field light emission element 24 and the deformation is recorded, the temperature measured by the temperature sensor, and the relation between the temperature and the deformation recorded in the table, and adjusts the distance between the heat-assisted magnetic recording head 2 and the disk 1 by driving a floating height adjusting actuator 27 based on the deformation, so as to avoid a contact thereof.

A system and method for measuring the modulation between a magnetic head and a magnetic storage medium, such as a disk, is disclosed. A magnetic read/write head is positioned above a magnetic storage medium at a given flying height. The magnetic read/write head reads a signal from the magnetic storage medium. A tester measures an alternating electric current between the magnetic read/write head through the slider and the magnetic storage medium. A computer may then calculate the modulation by the magnetic read/write head based on the alternating electric current. A DC voltage to the head may be applied to lower the flying height of the magnetic head.
