An image reading device reads a document using a plurality of reading modes including a sheet-through reading mode for reading a document at a fixed reading position while the document is automatically fed. The image reading device includes a first resolution changing means, a second resolution changing means, and a resolution setting means. The first changing means changes one of a linear velocity at which the document is fed and a traveling speed of a reading carriage to change a resolution at which the document is read in a sub-scanning direction. The second changing means electrically interpolates image data output from the first changing means to change a resolution of the image data. The resolution setting means provides a plurality of combinations of resolution change rates between the first and second changing means as resolution change modes and sets the first and second changing means to one of the combinations.

Then, different kinds of control are performed according to a document scanning mode. In an image-quality-priority scanning mode, a transfer unit (48) suspends transfer of the document (14), the document tray (11) is elevated until the upper surface height reaches a target height that is higher by a predetermined distance after the height detection sensor (31) is turned on, and the transfer unit resumes the transfer of the document. In a speed-priority scanning mode, while the transfer of the document (14) is continued by the transfer unit (48), the document tray (11) is elevated until the document tray reaches the target height.

SOLUTION: Conveyance of the original P is to be stopped once at the time point when a top end Pa of the original P which is being conveyed is advanced by a predetermined distance from a passing image first reading position 12a of a first reading pattern mark 15. Image reading means 10 which is previously stopping at a location opposing to the first reading pattern mark 15 is designed to read image data in the order toward a center side in a widthwise direction of the original P from both end sides in a longitudinal direction in the first reading pattern mark 15. Then the conveyance is to be stopped once at the time point when the top Pa of the original P is advanced by a predetermined distance from the passing image first reading position 12b of a second reading pattern mark 16. In the same way as described above, a boundary of a pair of left and right side edges Pb, Pc is to be read by the image reading means 10, then a boundary is to be determined from difference between the both pieces of the image data by an image process.
