Abstract:
A method for constructing an index suitable for indexing a large set of records identified by long generally randomly distributed record names and for answering membership queries about the set, the method comprising assigning each different record a different record name, determining that a new record name is not already represented in the index by checking an entry in a first level index that is shorter than the complete new record name, and determining that a queried record name is already represented in the index by determining that the queried record name is represented in a second level index that contains enough information to reconstruct the complete queried record name.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and methods for testing the formation of biofilms on various materials. The apparatus includes a lid and a vessel, wherein the lid may be configured to accept various materials for the testing of biofilm formation. For example, the lid may contain a plurality of projections onto which materials may be coated or disposed. The vessel is adapted to receive the lid in a fluid tight communication and to retain a liquid growth medium therein. After a material has been disposed upon the projections, the material is suspended within the vessel containing the liquid growth medium. The material is allowed to incubate for a period of time in which a biofilm forms upon the material. The material is then removed from the liquid growth medium and the biofilms formed thereupon are used to test the efficiency of various biocides.
Abstract:
Bacteria are incubated to form a biofilm on projections by providing a flow of liquid growth medium across projections, the direction of the flow of liquid being repeatedly changed, and an assay made of the resulting biofilm. Bacteria are incubated to form a biofilm on projections arranged in rows, with several projections in each row, while providing a flow of liquid growth medium across each row of projections, and an assay made of the resulting biofilm. Sensitivity of the biofilm to antibacterial reagent may be determined by treating the projections with antibacterial reagent before carrying out the assay, by treating each row of projections with a different antibacterial reagent, and each of the projections in a row with a different concentration of antibacterial reagent. A biofilm assay device includes a vessel including at least one channel for flow of liquid growth medium, projections arranged in at least one row and having a support for supporting the projections within the channel, and a tilt table to flow liquid growth medium along each channel in different directions across the projections. A further biofilm assay device includes a vessel including channels for flow of liquid growth medium, projections arranged in rows and having a support for supporting the projections within the channels, and a rocking table to rock the vessel and flow liquid growth medium along each channel across the projections.
Abstract:
On a document collaboration system, such as a wiki, the content of postings to the collaboration system is monitored for sensitive information. Under some embodiments, when instances of such sensitive information are detected, an e-mail is sent to the user that posted the collaboration page posting. In other embodiments, a message is then sent to a person associated with the entity that indicates that the information placed on the collaboration page is confidential information or is related to an asset of the entity. In further embodiments, individual people are assigned responsibility for monitoring the use of certain instances of sensitive information on the collaboration system. Each user is only notified when the instances they are responsible for appear on a collaboration page. In other embodiments, if a collaboration page includes an instance of sensitive information, access to the collaboration page is changed such that fewer people can access the collaboration page.
Abstract:
A method for constructing an index suitable for indexing a large set of records identified by long generally randomly distributed record names, and for answering membership queries about the set, the method comprising adding a new record to the set and assigning the new record a new record name using a process designed to produce names where at least a portion of each name is at least approximately random, determining that the new record name is not already represented in the index by checking a first level index, combining the new record name with record name information already represented in the index to form a combined record name which is shorter than the new record name, and adding the combined record name to the first level index to form a new first level index entry that represents the new record, wherein the first level index does not contain information sufficient to conclude that the new record name has been added to the index, wherein each different record in the set is assigned a different record name, wherein at least a portion of the first level index is ordered based on record names.

Abstract:
Within a document collaboration system, such as a wiki application, a logging component operates in association with a server. The logging component automatically creates and maintains a log of interactions between the server and users of the document collaboration system. The content of the log has a predictable format. In one embodiment, an analysis component identifies, from the log, entries associated with a failed search for a document in the collaboration system database. The terms not represented in the database are identified from the failed search entry. In this manner, statistics related to frequently unsuccessful search terms are generated and utilized as a basis for identifying opportunities for effective expansion of the content of the collaboration application.
Abstract:
A process is provided for producing glucose and other fermentable sugars from a liquid mixture containing anhydrosugars. One example of a process encompasses: 1) water extraction of a anhydrosugar-rich fast-pyrolysis bio-oil fraction that constitutes a residual after removal of volatile impurities, 2) further purification of said anhydrosugar-rich fraction, and 3) solid-phase catalytic hydrolysis of the anhydrosugars to yield glucose and other fermentable sugars. An exemplary application of the process is in the production of ethanol and other sugar-based fermentation products from bio-oil generated via fast pyrolysis of low-cost, high-availability lignocellulosic biomass resources.
