The invention relates to a device which is used for solidly connecting an acetabular cup shell to bone using at least one screw. According to the invention, the screw passes through a hole housing a ring mounted in the shell of the acetabular cup. The ring is mounted within an aperture of the shell and can be rotated therein about the longitudinal axis of the screw. The ring is a split-ring comprising a non-circular outer profile which co-operates with the non-circular profile of the hole which is disposed in the shell. In this way, when the ring is rotated in the hole and wedged in place therein, it is constricted thereby locking the screw to the shell in the desired position. Alternately the screw can have an enlarged thread adjacent it's head end to expand an internally threaded split-ring.

An orthopedic implant, such as a tibial tray, includes a body having a bone contacting surface with at least one and preferably two pegs extending from the bone contacting surface. Each of the pegs has a longitudinal axis angled with respect to the bone contacting surface and also angled in at least one direction consisting of a medial-lateral direction, an anterior-posterior direction and an inferior-superior direction. In the case of the tibial tray, the pegs form a non-perpendicular angle with the bone contacting surface of the baseplate and are angled in both a posterior direction and a medial or lateral direction.

One or more drive links connected to the saw extend to the blade head to pivot the blade head. The cutting guide and blade bar have complementary features for holding the blade bar to above a surface of the cutting guide. The features that hold the blade bar to the cutting guide allow the blade to move over the cutting guide surface while constrain the blade from moving out of the plane immediately above the cutting guide surface.

An implantable medical device includes a porous metal foam or foam-like structure having pores defined by metal struts or webs wherein the porous structure has directionally controlled pore characteristics. The pore characteristics controlled include one or more of the metal structure porosity, pore size, pore shape, pore size distribution and strut thickness. The pore characteristics may vary in one or more directions throughout the structure. Preferably the pore characteristics are controlled to match the porous metal structure to various mechanical and biological requirements of different regions of the structure in order to optimize aspects of the implants performance and may vary not only over the surface of the porous structure but through the depth of the porous structure. The thickness of the porous metal structure may also be modified to establish a thickness profile that optimizes mechanical and biological requirements of the implants performance. Acetabular cup embodiments of the invention are described. Various methods of manufacturing implants having directionally controlled pore characteristics are described.

The drive rods connect to a complementary driver integral with the saw. When the saw driver is actuated, the drive rods undergo reverse reciprocation.
