摘要:
The present invention is a cost-effective and compact micro-spectrometer for rapid detection of chemical compounds in the low concentration limit. The invention provides for significantly higher sensitivity compared to conventional spectroscopy techniques (continuous wave and Fourier transform methods) by placing the sample within a high Finesse etalon cavity. An Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) built on either continuous wave (CW-SPEC), or Fourier Transform Absorption Spectroscopy (FT-SPEC) is used to monitor the spectrum from the etalon cavity/sample combination during tuning of the etalon cavity˜this information is then used to reconstruct the absorption spectrum.

A versatile cavity actuator. The versatile cavity actuator includes a cavity having one or more polymer-based sidewalls. An energetic material is disposed therein. A heater is disposed on or within the cavity. In a specific embodiment, the cavity includes a thermally insulating base positioned beneath the heater, which is positioned near the bottom of the cavity. The polymer-based sidewalls are constructed from a photo-curable epoxy, which is disposed on a substrate via microelectromechanical processes. The sidewalls are angled or parabolic and are constructed via a low-temperature lithographic spin process compatible with post integrated circuit processing.

Some aspects of the invention provide for a method for detecting metabolic activity in a sample by obtaining a sample, illuminating the sample at a plurality of time points, measuring transmitted light from a marker of metabolic activity in the sample at the plurality of time points, and detecting the presence or absence of metabolic activity from a change in the transmitted light at the plurality of time points. Other aspects of the invention provide for a method for detecting metabolic activity in a sample by providing a sample have a detectable marker therein that is reflective of metabolic activity in the sample, producing an amplified signal from the marker, measuring the amplified signal at a plurality of time points, and detecting metabolic activity from a change in the signal. Additional aspects provide for a system for detecting metabolic activity in a sample.
