Abstract: A first method comprises using an imaging device to produce a plurality of images of a culture device, analyzing a first image to identify a microorganism colony at a first location, analyzing a second image to identify a gas bubble at a second location, and determining whether the first location is proximate the second location. A second method comprises analyzing an image of a culture device to detect gas bubbles and classifying the gas bubbles according to a size parameter associated with each of the gas bubbles. A third method comprises analyzing a first area of an image of a culture device to detect a first number of gas bubbles, analyzing a second area of the image to detect a second number of gas bubbles, and comparing the first number of gas bubbles to the second number of gas bubbles.

A second method comprises analyzing an image of a culture device to detect gas bubbles and classifying the gas bubbles according to a size parameter associated with each of the gas bubbles. A third method comprises analyzing a first area of an image of a culture device to detect a first number of gas bubbles, analyzing a second area of the image to detect a second number of gas bubbles, and comparing the first number of gas bubbles to the second number of gas bubbles.

Abstract: A method of identifying microbial colonies in a culture device is provided. The method comprises using an imaging device to produce a first image of a thin film culture device while providing illumination to a front side of the device and to produce a second image of the thin film culture device while providing illumination to a back side of the device. The method further comprises analyzing the first and second images to identify microorganism colonies in each image, analyzing the first and second images values of a size parameter for a colony at a particular location in the culture device, and comparing the values. The method can be used to differentiate and count at least two colony types.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to imaging techniques and image analysis techniques for automated analysis of biological growth media. According to this disclosure, the spectral responses of biological growth media can be used to identify and count biological agents from images of biological growth media. The biological growth media may be illuminated with two or more different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, and images of the biological growth media can be captured under these different illuminations. The spectral reflectance values in one or more first images can be normalized based on the spectral reflectance values in one or more second images, wherein the first images are associated with a different wavelength of illumination than the second images. The normalization may allow for better identification of biological agents that manifest on the biological growth media.

In one or more embodiments, the light detection device can include a housing that extends along a housing axis between top and bottom surfaces. The device can also include a port that is adapted to receive a sample, and a door connected to the housing. The door can include an actuator portion adapted to selectively move the door between a closed position and an open position, and a cover portion connected to the actuator portion and adapted to close the port when the door is in the closed position and open the port when the door is in the open position to allow external access to the port.
