Abstract: This disclosure describes a method for forming a sheet metal joint for attachment of a pull tab to a tear strip in a container end closure in which a bubble is first formed in the closure end panel, the bubble is reformed into a hollow rivet having a substantially cylindrical sidewall and an arcuate transverse end wall, and the rivet is staked or upset to compressively fold the transverse end wall thereof to form a head on the rivet which is at least as thick as the transverse end wall of the unstaked rivet.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to an easy-opening container end in which the opening device remains attached to the end after opening, and which includes a V-shaped opening flap in the container end which is forced or plunged into the container by means of a lever tab which has a line of weakness in its upper surface between its handle end and its nose end so that upon opening, the handle end of the tab may be depressed to a nonobstructing position on the container end without closing the pouring orifice in the end.

Abstract: 1,217,295. Container opened by tearing. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. 1 April, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 17113/69. Heading B8D. An aluminium alloy container closure 5 bears a peripheral shoulder 4, and on a tear-out region defined by a score line 6 is rotatably mounted a sheet metal tab 10 formed with a cam portion 18 and a ring handle 20, the former bearing against said shoulder and causing a rupture at the score line, on rotation of the tab in the direction of arrow " A ". The tab is pivoted by a rivet 9 formed integrally with the closure 5. The tear-out region may further be completely removed by pulling outwardly on the ring handle, which may be upturned slightly from the plane of the closure, or bear a raised lug to facilitate rotation. The tear-out portion may comprise the complete closure or a portion thereof.
