Abstract: The centering mechanism and method described herein are used for locating objects with respect to a center line or to a center. The mechanism includes opposed centering members for engaging opposite sides of an article to be centered so as to grip the article as a part of an assembly including a gauging element which is differentially positioned in accordance with the measured dimension of the article. The assembly is then moved with the article in a given direction to engage the gauging element with a stop at which time any article within a given range of sizes will be located in position with its center on a center line previously determined or with its center at a center point which has been previously determined.

Abstract: This mechanism comprises a shuffle feed mechanism having two sets of longitudinally extending serrated members forming a grid or bed, at least one of the sets of being movable longitudinally with respect to the other so as to progress articles from pocketto-pocket or valley-to-valley along the length of the mechanism by pushing of the articles upwardly along an inclined wall of a V-shaped notch and over the apex so as to slide or roll down into the next notch. The sets of shuffle members are elevated at their discharge ends with the outer shuffle members being at a quarter elevation so as to provide a transverse trough-like configuration to cause single filing of articles progressed therethrough. Also the shuffle feed mechanism includes barrier means extending longitudinally so as to confine the articles to a narrow path along which only a single article can be fed.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for orienting pears and similar articles in which an inclined trough support is provided by oppositely disposed upwardly diverging side walls which are closed at their lower or feed ends by a continuous upwardly concave surface forming a smooth continuation of each of the respective side walls of the trough. The side walls of the trough are spaced apart at the bottom to receive the upper stretch of a belt disposed between these side walls and which travels uphill to apply an upwardly progressing and rotating effect to a pear which is translated with respect to the support. When the pear has its bulb end uppermost, the only effect on the pear is the progressing effect as the angle represents an angle of repose in this position of the pear. If the stem end of the pear is uppermost, the rotating effect also applies and while the pear is being translated with respect to the side walls, it is also being rotated stem end over butt end to place the butt end uppermost. The result is that all of the pears are discharged or removed from the upper end of the trough with their butt ends foremost.
