Abstract: A proprotor system for a tiltrotor aircraft having a helicopter flight mode and an airplane flight mode. The proprotor system includes a yoke having a plurality of blade arms with inboard pockets. A centrifugal force and shear bearing assembly is disposed in each of the inboard pockets of the yoke. Each of a plurality of proprotor blades is coupled to the yoke by one of the bearing assemblies such that each proprotor blade has a pitch change degree of freedom about a pitch change axis and a tilting degree of freedom about a focal point. Each bearing assembly includes a centrifugal force bearing coupled to the yoke, a shear bearing coupled to the yoke and an inboard beam coupled between the centrifugal force bearing and the shear bearing. Each inboard beam is coupled to a respective proprotor blade.

Abstract: A method of blade fold for a tiltrotor aircraft includes configuring the tiltrotor aircraft in a flight ready position with a rotor system in an inverted-Y position, unlocking a first rotor blade of the rotor system to permit the first rotor blade to pivot relative to a yoke of the rotor system, restraining the first rotor blade to allow the first rotor blade to pivot relative to the yoke as the yoke is rotated, rotating the rotor system in a first direction so that the first rotor blade pivots closer to a second rotor blade, rotating the rotor system in a second direction to orient the rotor system into a modified inverted-Y position, unlocking a third rotor blade to allow the third rotor blade to pivot relative to the yoke as the yoke is rotated, and rotating the rotor system in the second direction so that the third rotor blade pivots closer to the second rotor blade.

Abstract: A composite yoke includes a plurality of packs of unidirectional plies and at least one pack of chopped fibers disposed between two adjacent packs of unidirectional plies. A method of manufacturing a composite yoke includes arranging a plurality of plies of unidirectional fibers to form a first pack of unidirectional plies, arranging a layer of chopped fibers on the first pack of unidirectional plies, arranging a plurality of plies of unidirectional fibers on to form a second pack of unidirectional plies on the layer of chopped fibers, curing the composite yoke to form a cured composite yoke, and cutting excess material from the first pack of unidirectional plies, the layer of chopped fibers, and the second pack of unidirectional plies to form a plurality of arms.
