The present invention relates to a device and method for measuring the bleach requirement and bleachability of pulp in a pulp mill. The invention enables pulp mill operators to better control bleach plants. In one aspect, the invention comprises a system and method for rapid bleaching of the pulp, and measuring the rapid bleached brightness and lignin content of the pulp. In another aspect, the invention comprises an optical system for use in practicing embodiments of this invention.

A device for obtaining a sample of fiber from an aqueous slurry of fiber flowing through a stock line, comprising a first isolation inlet valve element together with a water supply orifice, located inside a fiber stock line; a second isolation valve means, and a third isolation valve, mounted in flow series from the sample inlet point on the stock line. This device allows a complete water purging down through the inlet valve element, as well as fiber samples to flow out of the stock line in the presence of diluent water. Samples flow from the first isolation valve means to a final collection point, without contamination or plugging.

The invention can be summarized as follows. There is provided a method of bleaching chemical pulp comprising the steps of exposing chemical pulp to a chemical bleaching state to produce a partially bleached pulp and treating the partially bleached pulp with a thermophilic, alkalophilic xylanase in an alkaline extraction stage at pH of 8 to 14. The method may be performed in a mill and may form part of a more complex pulp bleaching process. The invention also relates to the use of a thermophilic, alkalophilic xylanase in an alkaline extraction stage of a pulp bleaching process in a mill.

A tracer compound comprising a neutral salt of a halogen is introduced into a first location in the path of the pulp slurry; at a second location an automated detector detects the concentration of tracer compound over a time period; a controller relays a voltage signal from the detector to a processor which uses a calibration curve to integrate tracer concentration over time and thereby derive pulp residence, between the first and second locations.

Disclosed herein is a process for recycling water in a cellulosic conversion process that comprises selecting process stream(s) that may contain reduced levels of inhibitors and subsequently subjecting the stream(s) to a treatment process to produce treated water. The treated water is thereafter recycled to the cellulosic conversion process, associated utilities or the seal water system. The process streams selected for treatment may comprise less than 5 wt % organic content and/or less than 5 wt % inorganic content. The process of the invention comprises at segregating process streams based on their treatment requirements. The segregated process streams may be sent to respective separate treatments selected from anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, physical separation and chemical treatment.
