摘要: An arrangement for concentrating broadband data from a plurality of CPEs (customer premises equipments) for transmission over a link to an ATM network. Because each CPE can generate data at the full rate of the link, it is necessary to detect peaks of bursty traffic from a CPE user quickly and to limit the rate of data transmission whenever the capacity of the link may be exceeded. This is accomplished first by allowing the transmission of certain classes of traffic (lower priority) only when a token to permit transmission has been accumulated in the CPE, and second, by having a FIFO buffer for each user and detecting whenever the FIFO buffer has accumulated more than n cells; when this condition is detected, no more tokens are sent back to the user. The user is not allowed to accumulate more than m tokens. Advantageously, this arrangement allows essentially the full bandwidth of the link to the ATM network to be utilized by a timely throttling of bursts of traffic when they cannot be accommodated.

摘要: The network of the invention uses asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) as the exclusive transport between the central office and the outside distribution plant of either a SONET or analog facility. Telephony and other narrowband signals are transported from a local switching system over synchronous facilities to a host terminal. Digital video and digital data ATM signals are transmitted to the host terminal from a video provider and data service provider, respectively. The host terminal converts the synchronous narrowband signals to composite cell ATM format and combines these signals with the ATM video and data signals and delivers the ensemble of ATM cells over either a standard SONET transport format to a plurality of distribution managers or other network elements or analog network. To convert the synchronous signals, the host terminal of the invention includes a synchronous to asynchronous converter (SAC) that provides the format conversion needed to provide voice and other narrowband signals over ATM. The SAC also functions to agilely move between cell sizes such that the 48 bytes of the cell payload can be mapped to carry anywhere between the single and 48 connections. Thus, the SAC adjusts the cell configuration to balance performance and bandwidth use in a real-time manner. Each distribution manager consists of several functional elements including an ATM routing function that directs the ATM cells to the correct line drop or processing logic. Specifically, composite cells from the host terminal are received by the distribution manager ATM switch fabric. Based on the contents of their headers, the cells are routed by the fabric to one of several ports. If the address indicates the cells are telephony cells, they are routed to a SAC input where the telephony ATM cells are converted back to synchronous traffic and transmitted to the customer premise over a line card and narrowband drop. If the cells are data or video cells, they are routed to the appropriate interface, and out the broadband line card and drop.

摘要: The priority and security encoding system for electronic mail messages functions to ascribe a message characterization code to the electronic mail message that enables the router as well as the destination message server to more efficiently process the electronic mail message, based upon the message characterization code. The message characterization code is assigned by the message originator, or the message server that serves the message originator, to identify the nature of the electronic mail message. The message characterization code can be defined to denote any one or more message related factors, such as: message content, identification of the message originator, identification of the message recipient, or other message processing factors. The message characterizing code is used by the message routers, network nodes, and destination message server to prioritize the processing of electronic mail messages and optionally provide subscriber defined alternate routing of certain classes of messages. This message characterizing code can also be used to automatically initiate various electronic message security measures to safeguard the most sensitive classes of messages, without the need for subscriber intervention.

摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting silent faults in feeding diodes of redundant DC power supplies. The voltages on both sides of the feeding diodes are measured. Arrangements are then made to ensure that if corresponding feeding diodes are both operative, that current flows through a particular one of these diodes. The measurements of voltage under the various conditions will reveal any open or shorted feeding diodes. The voltage across a diode can be altered by heating the diode through the process of heating a power resistor that is in thermal contact with that diode. Alternatively, a controllable rectifier of a power source can be controlled to reduce the voltage of that power source, and thereby drive current through the diode connected to the other power source. Advantageously, this arrangement allows silent faults in these diodes to be detected without substantial risk of causing the failure in the powered system.

摘要: A substrate is provided that supports a laser array chip positioned such that the light streams emanating from the laser array are parallel to and substantially coplanar with the surface of the substrate. A plurality of apertures are formed in the substrate between the light streams for receiving a photodiode array chip. The photodiode array chip is formed as a comb-like structure where the "teeth" of the comb are aligned with and fit into the apertures formed in the substrate such that the photodiode array chip is supported perpendicular to the substrate. Located on each of the teeth of the photodiode array chip is a photodiode. The photodiodes are arranged such that when the photodiode array chip is inserted into the substrate the photodiodes are substantially coplanar with the surface of the substrate. Using such a construction, the light streams emanating from the lasers on the laser array chip are interdigitated with and coplanar with the photodiodes. Fibers or waveguides in the substrate connect to the lasers and photodiodes and extend parallel to and coplanar with one another such that adjacent fibers or waveguides can be simply connected to the inputs of a CWDM coupler. The optical module of the invention can be mounted on an interface card to provide high density line cards required in fiber based telecommunications networks.

摘要: The outside distribution plant of the invention consists of a remote narrowband terminal such as a digital loop carrier and a remote broadband terminal such as broadband distribution element or the like that receive narrowband and broadband telecommunications signals, respectively, from a switching system or other network element. The signals are delivered to a variety of different types of line cards where each of the different types of line cards provide a different type of telecommunications service as is known in the prior art. Connection lines emanating from selected ones of the broadband line cards are connected to the inputs of a remotely controlled crossbar array where the inputs of the array can be selectively connected to the outputs of the crossbar array. The outputs of the crossbar array are connected to distribution lines that terminate at one of a plurality of diplex filters. By properly configuring the crossbar array, the broadband line cards can be connected to any of the diplex filters such that any customer line has access to any available broadband line card. A plurality of narrowband line cards are connected to the diplex filters such that a combined broadband and narrowband signal can be delivered to selected ones of the customer lines. In this manner the network resources can be efficiently distributed among the customer lines. Likewise, connection lines emanating from other narrowband line cards are connected to the inputs of a second remotely controlled crossbar array to allow a second narrowband line to be connected to selected ones of the customers.
