    Abstract: Systems and methods for optically initiated information collection for network connected devices are provided. In one embodiment, a device comprises: at least one service port to connect a cable to the device; an optical information interface comprising: an optical information interface management function executed by a processor coupled to a memory; an optical information interface database that stores information associated with the device; and an optical emitter controller in communication with the optical information interface management function; wherein the optical information interface management function receives from the optical information interface database a set of information selected for optical broadcast; and wherein the optical emitter controller varies an optical output of at least one optical emitter to modulate the set of information selected for optical broadcast onto an optical signal generated by the at least one optical emitter.

    Abstract: A pluggable active optical module (AOM) having an electrical connector at a first end and one or more optical adapters at a second end is disclosed. The AOM includes a storage device interface at the second end, and a programmable processor coupled to the storage device interface and one or more first contacts of the electrical connector. The programmable processor is configured to access a storage device in one or more optical fibers through the storage device interface and provide physical layer management (PLM) information obtained therefrom to a host device connected to the electrical connector. The AOM also includes a switch coupled between a second contact of the electrical connector and ground, the switch coupled to the programmable processor such that that programmable processor can control the switch to selectively connect a second contact of the electrical connector to ground.

    Abstract: An optical power detection system comprises a sensor and a reader. The sensor is configured to detect light in the cladding of an optical fiber. The sensor is positioned both within a ferrule of the optical fiber and proximate the cladding. The sensor is additionally configured to produce an output signal representative of the detected light. The reader is electrically coupled to the sensor and is configured to receive the sensor output signal. The reader is additionally configured to operation on the output signal to produce a corresponding visual and/or audible indication of the optical power in the optical fiber.
