    摘要: The preparation of polymers which contain pendant hydrophobic groups or a mixture of both pendant hydrophobic and alkoxylated groups is accomplished by reacting a preexisting polymer having pendant acid amide and/or carboxylic groups with a primary or secondary amine in a substantially homogenous reaction mixture, the amine reactant including the desired hydrophobic and alkoxylated radicals. A unique polymer, having both pendant hydrophobic and alkoxylated groups, is provided.

    摘要: Pendant amide-containing polymers may be modified in such a way to achieve substituted pendant amide groups described by the structure: ##STR1## wherein: R is chosen from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) groups,R.sup.1 is a multivalent hydrocarbonaceous bridging group containing from 1-20 carbon atoms,X is a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt functional group,Y is chosen from the group consisting of --OR'", and ##STR2## and mixtures thereof, and whereinR'" is chosen from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl groups, aryl alkyl, aryl groups and the like,q ranges from 0-50,m ranges from -24,n ranges from 0-24, provided that the sum of m plus n is at least 1.Processes for achieving modified polymers having the above functional group is also disclosed.

    摘要: A method for inhibiting corrosion in industrial cooling waters which contain hardness and a pH of at least 6.5, by dosing the water with a composition which comprises a water-soluble inorganic phosphate capable of inhibiting corrosion in an aqueous alkaline environment and a hydrocarbon polymer containing an N-substituted acrylamide polymers with an amide structure as follows: ##STR1## where R.sub.2 is hydrogen or methyl, where R.sub.1 is a hydrogen or an alkyl and R is alkylene or phenylene, and X is sulfonate, (poly)hydroxyl, (poly)carboxyl or carbonyl, and combinations thereof; or containing derivatized maleic anhydride homo-, co- and terpolymers having N-substituted maleamic acid units, N-substituted maleimide units and maleic acid (and salts) units having a structure as follows: ##STR2## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each independently chosen from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxyl, carboxyalkyl, carboxyamide, phenyl, substituted phenyl, linear or branched alkyl of from one to ten carbon atoms,and substituted alkyl of from one to ten carbon atoms, where the substituent is phosphonic acid; phosphinic acid; phosphate ester; sulfonic acid; sulfate ester, carboxyamide, (poly)carboxy and (poly)hydroxy, alkoxy and carboxylate ester groups; and combinations thereof.

    摘要: A process of making a water-in-oil emulsion which contains from 5-60% by weight of a hydrophobic acrylamide terpolymer composed of the random repeating units: ##STR1## where: R is methyl or hydrogen,M is hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonia, or amine,R.sup.1 is a hydrophobic radical,with the mol ratio of A:B:C being A(2-50):B(50-98):C(0.1-15), which comprises reacting a 5-60% by weight water-in-oil emulsion of an acrylamide polymer with a hydrophobic amine at a temperature above 120.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to transamidate the acrylamide groups in the acrylamide polymer with the hydrophobic amine.

    摘要: The invention comprises a method of preparing copolymers of acrylamido sulfonic acids which comprises converting to acrylamido sulfonic groups at least 5 mole % of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid groups in a polymer which contains at least 5 mole % of these monomers in its structures by reacting an aqueous solution of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid polymer with an amino sulfonic acid under pressure at a temperature of at least 70.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to convert at least 5 mole % of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid groups in the polymer to amido sulfonic acid groups corresponding to the starting amino sulfonic acid.
