A method of inhibiting corrosion of iron and steel alloys in contact with industrial waters is claimed. The method comprises treating said waters with an effective corrosion inhibiting amount of a water soluble polymer having an average molecular weight ranging from about 2,000 to about 50,000, said polymer containing at least four mole percent of a hydroxamic acid mer unit.

The preparation of polymers which contain pendant hydrophobic groups or a mixture of both pendant hydrophobic and alkoxylated groups is accomplished by reacting a preexisting polymer having pendant acid amide and/or carboxylic groups with a primary or secondary amine in a substantially homogenous reaction mixture, the amine reactant including the desired hydrophobic and alkoxylated radicals. A unique polymer, having both pendant hydrophobic and alkoxylated groups, is provided.

C. for a period of time sufficient to transamidate the acrylamide groups in the acrylamide polymer with the hydrophobic amine.

The invention comprises a method of preparing copolymers of acrylamido sulfonic acids which comprises converting to acrylamido sulfonic groups at least 5 mole % of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid groups in a polymer which contains at least 5 mole % of these monomers in its structures by reacting an aqueous solution of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid polymer with an amino sulfonic acid under pressure at a temperature of at least 70.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to convert at least 5 mole % of the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid groups in the polymer to amido sulfonic acid groups corresponding to the starting amino sulfonic acid.

Polymers tagged with pendant fluorescent groups are prepared by the (trans)amidation derivatization of pre-existing polymers having carbonyl-type pendant groups. Polymers having pendant amide groups wherein the amide nitrogen is substituted with fluorescent moieties, prepared by (trans)amidation derivatization, are provided. Polymers having pendant (sulfonated) napthalene moieties substituted to amide nitrogen are provided.
